Floyd gets minimal credit for beating Alvarez right now....

Although I think he would still deserve some credit for beating Alvarez, as a Floyd fan I mostly agree with you.Right now, Alvarez is not prime. Hasn't had any really big wins, all he's had are decent wins over Rhodes and Cintron. Floyd won't get any credit besides minimal credit for beating Alvarez right now.
The only way Floyd gets credit for beating Alvarez is if Canelo turns around and beats Kirkland and Cotto within the next year or so. He would also get credit if Canelo goes on to be a 3-4 division champ and have a great career.
RIGHT NOW, it's a C+/B- fight at the highest, and no one can honestly say that it's better than Pacquiao-Bradley, if this is indeed how it plays out. This is the first time in a LONG TIME that I would be left saying "Manny picked a better opponent than Floyd right now". When Manny fought Clottey, Floyd one-upped him big time and fought Mosley when he did. When Manny fought Marquez at 144, Floyd one-upped him and fought a prime Ortiz, coming off wins. RIGHT NOW, it looks like Manny is going to one-up Floyd for the first time in a long time.
If Floyd would just force Alvarez to fight Cotto or Kirkland first, than it would be a really huge fight, and seen as a really legit fight. If Alvarez had beaten Angulo and Vanes, in addition to Rhodes and Cintron, I'd say it's a solid B+ fight no doubt. But, he only beat Gomez and Hatton, in addition to Rhodes and Cintron.
He doesn't get much credit for beating Alvarez right now, only in the long run, depending on what Canelo does, will Floyd ever get big credit for it.
Alvarez Mayweather has the potential to be a really big fight a year from now, but right now it's not credible for the same reason that Mayweather Ortiz wasn't a worthwhile fight until Ortiz beat Berto.
Alvarez needs to take a step up this year. imo he first needs to fight a faded star such as Mosley, Margarito, Spinks or Williams to see if he can perform on the big stage. Winning that he needs to go on to fight someone legit such as Lara (if Lara gets another couple of wins) or the winner or Kirkland Molina.
Provided Alvarez achieves this I'm hoping for Mayweather Alvarez Cinco de Mayo 2013.
In the meantime Mayweather should fight Cotto and Martinez, and winning those as well as beating Alvarez he should retire if the Pacquiao fight still can't be made.Comment

right now?......what you mean is ever?..right?
because whether its tomorrow or next year he will never beat Mayweather so the kid would be smart to get this money now.

he has just as much chance at anyone else who's name has been thrown out.
This is prize fighting man....the biggest prize available for Alvarez is vs Mayweather....losing to Mayweather is not a bad blemish on your resume at all.

Just a little bit more credit than Torrecampo and Singsurat.Last edited by D4thincarnation; 01-31-2012, 04:48 AM.Comment

I think we can all agree that it's not a great fight. Alvarez hasn't looked anything more than competent against C-level fighters like Cintron and will likely get outclassed by Mayweather. If he had knockout power, then maybe the fight would have more potential, but he doesn't and it's not like Mayweather gets hit flush very often anyway. This is a money fight, pure and simple. Mexicans and Mexican-Americans will lap this fight up especially, along with the casuals and the hardcore fight junkies among us who can't say no to a high-profile fight, even though they know it won't be competitive.Comment
