Circumstances change. When Cotto saw that Floyd would come up at 154, he decided to say, "Fk the catch-weight". Cotto isn't gonna make any concessions for Pac like he did the first time.

That's fine, as long as we're not pretending 150 was the dealbreaker, or even Pac's idea. This is Cotto proposing it right here

From what I understand, Pac accepted the original 150lb terms and Cotto changed his mind (due to Floyd setting the precedent), and I'm glad he did. Cotto found a legit contender in Trout, a match-up that allows him to spread the wealth around and shine the spotlight on an up-and-comer. Cotto made the "right" decision.

I agree with all of this, and big props to Cotto for taking on Trout. He was dead set on NYC though, which pretty much was a no go for any big name. But he could have settled for a much less dangerous opponent.

          • i don't know why cotto asked margarito for a c/w, was the fight eventually fought at one? well if it was, that's not a good look on cotto. but anyways, that's a different situation. pacquiao completely destroyed cotto @ 145, the challenge of him moving up one division to fight someone he already beat handily should have been a no brainer for pac. it's not like fighting someone else like marquez or bradley would bring in more money. it is what it is, the negotiations fell through and now cotto is fighting trout. and to me, as well as the posters above me, is a good move. trout is a difficult fighter and will make for an interesting match against cotto. really looking forward to this one.

Cotto asked Marg for 150, with 160 rehydration clause. That's very severe for a super welter. Marg rejected, they settled on 153. Keep in mind Cotto was not moving up, he was defending his belt.

Pac was explicit after Marg, he's done moving up. That's fair, right, he's moved up a record 7. I doubt it's about Cotto, he just happens to be the 3rd biggest draw in boxing, plus a small super welter willing/able to do 150. At least that was the case earlier this year, check the article

                • Crippled shoulder Pacquiao with a belly at 154 is an attractive opponent for Cotto.
