Comments Thread For: Frank Warren Fires at Hearn over Saunders, Boxnation Jabs

In response to Eddie Hearn's recent comments regarding Billy Joe Saunders and Boxnation I would like to clarify a few things.

Billy Joe Saunders never called for a fight with John Ryder. It was Eddie Hearn who instigated it in an interview with Boxing News before he publicly offered Billy a fight against Ryder on Twitter, an offer that should've come through me, his manager. In response we contacted Matchroom and offered John Ryder £10,000 to challenge Billy for his Southern Area belt on our big London show in March. When you consider that he's an unknown challenger who’s last show was on a dinner show in Chigwell, it was a fantastic offer. Matchroom came back and subsequently offered Billy, an accomplished Olympian, a paltry £6,500 to defend his title in Sheffield. What planet is this guy on when he talks about it being similar money? I've offered an unknown challenger nearly twice as much as he has offered our champion. Delusion and arrogance doesn't come close to it. Eddie then goes on to talk about TV platforms and how Sky are the only choice, more arrogance and delusion. [Click Here To Read More]

hennessey "built and promoted" froch did he?i think froch himself was the only one did that, no-one in the public had bloody heard of the poor guy until recently.
unfortunately whilst warren usually does have some good points he tends to eclipse those with a bit of nonsense to go with it.

as well with brook, it would have been nice for him to get a title shot a while back rather than be sat twiddling his thumbs. i don't care whose fault that was, it happened. however i think the route and the pace of it that he's going now is a good way of doing things for him. i think it's going just as it should, and people are actually beginning to know who brook is now. the fight in the US was a good test run for a big fight over there. wouldn't say he's being "fast"tracked as such but he's certainly on a path and making sure progress along it.
i reckon hatton is a good opponent right now for brook, especially up north, local derby kinda thing. hatton earnt plenty of respect against alvarez and so is certainly well known and competent enough to be in there. good fight.

with barker, he was never going to be a long term unbeaten world champion, he was unlikely to get a shot even. however he had a chance and gave a pretty good showing against martinez which gained him plenty of respect and he'll no doubt get other decent fights off the back of that. one or two of the other fighters that have got shots at titles also never would have done otherwise so have done well in terms of that.

i think it's great that matchroom and warren are giving each other a bit of competition. for a start there was no boxnation before eddie hearn got going, so i dunno if that's co-incidence. also the amount of competitive fights involving british fighters right now is great, a real revival going on.
good healthy competition which the fans are reaping the benefits of.

He didn't really build Calzaghe into a star on Sky, JC should've been a much bigger name and should've been involved in meaningful fights far more often/earlier. Also recall that Calzaghe-Lacy was on ITV and Calzaghe-Kessler on Setanta, and those were his biggest UK fights. Calzaghe-Hopkins was Setanta as well IIRC.

I know people can blame Calzaghe for some of that but the point is that Sky was where he had his low-exposure fights against guys who were not world class or popular.

Both Barry and Eddie are known wideboys.

Frank, even though he has been rather whiny in his weekly paper column over his past fighters, has been there and done that.

Whilst Frank has some valid points there, he needs to improve a couple of things.

              1) People would rather watch Barker Martinez, and Barker lose valiantly than watch Cleverly vs Karpency, which doesn't have an element of intrigue or on the face of it competitiveness.

              2) He needs to work on the pricing point of his shows (like Hearn has) and thus selling out some of the bigger shows. Groves vs Degale at the O2 had a great attendance (but not sold out) and at Burns Katsidis he gave away a lot of tickets via Boxnation and there were quite a few empty seats. Maybe charge Boxnation subscribers half price or something for tickets, (who in turn bring a mate which widens the audience base/potential subscribers) in addition to the free giveaways. Especially now that the undercards are a lot thinner.

              3) If he wants Boxnation subscribers to rapidly multiply, he needs to get the rights to a huge big ticket event like Mayweather / Khan / Pacquiao / Haye (if that is economically viable).

Overall, doing a fantastic job with the channel, much happier now securing rights for fights like Stieglitz, Huck, Cunningham, but would be good to see some of the american fights on there a la Alexander/Maidana, Rubio vs Chavez Jr, Kirkland Molina etc.

The reality is that Froch, Barker have boxed Johnson, Ward and Martinez in 2011 in front of an audience of MILLIONS,

Whereas his stable are fight stiffs like Karpency for pennies, in front of a couple of thousand.

John Murray got destroyed by Warren - Froch and Barker left with their reputation and careers intact despite defeat.

Barker earned £250,000+ and Eddie never took a penny of his purse, only a chunk of the tv money which barely covered his flights. That's the class of the guy.

Warren is smarting cos Hearn has built Kell Brook into a ticket-selling contender, whereas Warren failed Brook with turd opponents on tiny undercards.

Boxnation's subscribers signed up for Cotto vs Margarito - not Bunce or Karpency.

They have cancelled a lot of shows in December and January leaving subscribers with nothing good to watch, apart from some turd fights in Germany.

Warren would give his left bollock for Froch and a good Sky deal like Matchroom have secured.

Boxnation will be the end of him.
