Nick Diaz has the best hands in MMA, he is one of the very very few fighters who is committed to a body attack.

Also what do you guys think of his fight with Condit. With the "stand up" department.
the first question is simple and the answer is most guys in mma dont know how to fight. just bcuz you are throwing a ball doesnt mean you are playing basketball, anyone with arms can just randomly throw a ball at a basket but that doesnt mean they have any acctual skills. anyone can throw a punch but that doesnt mean they are boxing, they dont necessarily know what they are doing.

diaz has a bit figured out, hes not on the level of an anderson silva or a jose aldo but still above the majority of mma fighters. why?

        pros:

        - he knows how to punch, throws with relatively proper technique.

        - he knows how to hurt someone, not by loading up on wide punches but with short, accurate punches his oponent doesnt see.

        - he mixes up his punches, he puts together straight shots, hooks and uppercuts when he throws and goes to both the body and head. he also has an understanding of how one punch creates an opening elsewhere and doesnt just put together diffrent punches at random, he throws intelligent combinations.

        - hes tall, hes a southpaw and hes busy. the punches come from strange angles bcuz of his stance, they come in high numbers and they are hard to get away from bcuz hes got such good reach. this combination of things makes his pressure very hard to overcome, it takes a level of skill and intelligence rarely seen in mma. it takes real craft or..

        - ..brawling. which is what he he does best. his oponents can choose to brawl with him but thats rarely a good choice. his chin, toughness and stamina makes him the favourite to win down the strecth in those war of attrition type fights.

        cons:

        - very limited defense. he stands straight up without moving his head much, stands right in front of his oponent most of the time and brings his hands back very low after he punches. his only real defense is keeping his oponents busy by constantly defending punches, counterpunching is such a extremely rare skill in mma he often gets away with it.

        - makes few adjustments. his style has been very effective in most fights, but when it isnt he doesnt know how to adapt. his only way of fighting on his feet is to push his oponent back and let his hands go like a maniac, thats all he knows.

        ...

diaz didnt outbox penn, he outworked him and outslugged him. again, just bcuz you are throwing punches doesnt mean you are boxing. nick was younger, fresher, bigger and stronger. he made it a war and bj couldnt keep up. penn does have far more boxing skills than nick though.

i havent seen enough of condit to make a real assessment of his boxing skills. he did knock hardy out, who has a great chin. if he has the power to hurt nick it could get very interesting, hes gonna have to be able to plant his feet and get real power shots off even as diaz is coming at him guns blazing though. he cant let nick put him on the defensive and push him back on his heels, he cant get dragged into a brawl either. does he have the counterpunching skills to make nick miss and catch him clean with real power? idk but i figure thats what he has to do.

            He's a zombie.

He breaks people down with pressure and high workrate. he sets a pace that most fighters cant withstand. Expect everyone of his fights to look like Cotto/Margy 1.

I love him though, gives us a show. Headbutts punches and smiles.

some of the best in MMA considering his lack of handspeed and power

scratch that, he throws straight/short shots and they get there fast from far away, so he's got pretty good handspeed

he's not as explosive as anderson silva,
or the reem, to name a few great MMA strikers

but he is very technical for somebody in MMA
he puts combinations together well. his punches flow naturally.

i hate to sound sour, but lots of guys in MMA just swing and call it boxing

diaz has clearly actually put in some rounds in a ring with some decent boxers, and not just MMA guys trying out boxing.

he's also got a legit gas tank and a five round pace (which most in MMA cant come close to sustaining.)
that's where his talent lies; his gas tank and his chin and fighting mentality. the dude is durable.

He doesn't box well, I mean standing in front of people with your hands down and chin in the air is smth for Mayorga, not classic well trained boxers.

I find him very flat footed as well, Edgar has more that boxing fundament in his game.

People say Nick Diaz boxes well because he incorporates certain aspects of boxing in his mma game. He uses a jab to set up combinations, which most mma fighters underuse. He also mixes up to the body and head. That, and staying loose and patient and not putting 100% power in every punch, but rely more on combinations.

But that's exactly why he's succesfull and should stay in MMA, because that is exactly what MMA is about: taking things from different martial arts and putting them together to create a total package.

If Dos Santos trained to be a Professional Boxer from a younger age and focused on it he could have been an elite Boxer he'd be among the top fighters

Something you guys need to understand is that there are guys who can box and guys who can just fight.

                      Nick Diaz can fight.

His boxing is very awkward and unorthodox but he knows how to fight. When he's in the ring, it's like a fish in water.

I have worked with guys who look great on the heavy bag, speed bag, double end bag, mitts...etc

Yet when they get in the ring they panic. Nick Diaz might not be the prettiest boxer but he just knows how to move, connect with short accurate punches and is a fighter and that's something you can't teach, it just comes natural to some.
