Why didn't Cotto fight Hatton at 140?

Nobody said Tszyu was past his prime until he fought Hatton. He showed no signs of being faded or shot in that fight whatsoever.
Cotto was rocked at 140 a few times and he didn't actively seek a fight with Hatton either. I can't recall one time he even mentioned Hatton's name at all. I have been a Hatton supporter since about 2002.Comment

In fairness, I don't think Cotto started calling out opponents until recently.
I think it'd be a great fight. I think it rides alot of Cotto's mental strength and his ability to be rocked at 140, that gives Hatton a good shot.
I think Tszyu was definately the smarter fight, based on the risk/reward ratio, would have been cool to watch him fight Cotto though.
Tszyu was the only fight that mattered in 2005. Remember, at that time Kostya was the man and to be the man you have to go through the man. If you were aiming to wrap up the division, you wanted to fight Tszyu. Hatton got the title, the cash and the prestige from that fight and he can always say he did beat one ATG.Comment

Hatton's pressure though wouldn't be as dramatic as Margarito's due to his size. On top of that, Hatton always left himself wide open when he lunged in, Cotto was and is still and underrated counter puncher and would definitely hit Hatton with hard shots coming. Cotto's body work as well when he was at 140 was 2nd to none (I'd put it over Hatton's as well) along with having a variety of punches and better combinations overall.Comment

A mile? A MILE?? I challenge you to rewatch that fight and offer your scorecard. That was a very close fight, many of whom thought Hatton lost.
I don't care what people said before the fight all you have to do is watch the fight, look how Tszyu looked, then realize he retired after. Tszyu had so many injuries at the end of his career man it was crazy. He was always injured.
Cotto being rocked at 140 doesn't mean he'd lose to hatton. He was rocked, never KO'd which is a huge difference. Trinidad was knocked down like 7 times early on that didn't mean he had a weak chin or couldn't take a punch. Even if hatton had a slightly better chin at 140 that's a horrible way to conclude he beats cotto, as again Cotto was the far superior boxer.
After looking at punch stats, they did throw about the same number of shots. Hatton landed far more power shots, which probably made me think he threw a lot more. It has been a while since I saw the fight but I remember well how it went. Collazo had like a couple decent rounds at the very end and appeared to stun Hatton once and somehow people tended to say he won the whole fight based on that. Give me a break. hatton won easily on the cards in a competitive fight. If I'm not mistaken Lederman had Hatton winning as well.
Secondly, Tszyu's work was smothered by Ricky's style. It may have been a bad matchup for him stylewise but in no way, shape or form did he look faded at all. None. he landed the straight right at will and Hatton walked through it.
Lastly, Cotto was good at 140 but certainly not his best. While he has always been technically better than Hatton , he was rocked on a few occasions but those fighters didn't have the pressure to stop him like Hatton may or may not have had at the time. All I'm saying is that Hatton isn't outclassed at that time as you suggest. If he fought his plan and got to Cotto he could have stopped him.Comment

Styles make fights my friend. Triangle theories just don't pan out in boxing. Katsidis gave Marquez all kinds of trouble and I see him as a less effective version of Hatton. That makes that a pick em fight at 140 in my opinion.Comment

i agree that marquez could beat hatton at 140 but thats on styles. marquez could beat cotto at 140 as well. cotto would easily be drawn into a fire fight with hatton and i feel that would give hatton the advantage. he knew how to fight in the clinch and break. again i feel his chin was better at 140 than cottos. cotto was stronger but hattons power could easily compete with cottos at 140. ill never say hatoon could beat cotto at 147 but at 140 m confident he would.Comment
