Because, at the time, Top Rank didn't feel Cotto was built enough (as a STAR) to put him in against Hatton. They were very confident in his ability but believed they had a burgeoning star on his hand and they weren't ready to put him in the big fights yet. Don't forget, Cotto wasn't what you see today. They were slowly creating the brand, putting him in fights at MSG (NOT in front of packed houses back then).

Here's a quote from Cotto from mid-2005: “Those fights are coming,” Cotto told reporters. “A lot of people don’t realize that boxing is a business. Sometimes fights make sense and sometimes they don’t. When a fight with Mayweather makes sense, we’ll do it and it’ll be a business decision. And I’ll be more than ready.”

Hatton didn't want to fight Cotto at the time.

Why would he? Way too much risk with such little reward (at the time)

Both were relatively untested at that point.

You can't really blame Hatton either because Frank Warren knew he could get him a fight with the Tszyu-Mitchell winner for the Lineage so why risk losing that by fighting Cotto?

As for who would have won? I'd say Cotto. Would have been a good fight though.

damn, that's a good one. I'd probably favor marquez in a close decision. His timing is off the chains, definitely would have gave cotto all he could handle no question.

Because Arum and his matchmakers wouldnt let him fight for a strap that wasn't vacant..... Not really a fan of Cottos but I always thought he was better then what TR did

I think Team Hatton was told to stare clear of Cotto at that time, Arum did say they were willing to come to england to do the fight but in the end they were both young and went a different path, One thing is sure though Hatton's promoter at the time (Warren) would have never never ever sign Hatton up for that fight.

I savored this fight for the longest time along with Mayweather/Cotto in '07-08.Damn shame it never happened.I was pretty confident in Cotto's ability to beat Hatton. As soon as Hatton stepped up to big names he was put away with ease.

The fight i really would of like to see was Ricardo Torres vs Hatton.Mann that dude could slug! Gave Cotto alot of trouble, but due to Hatton's style also it was going to be interesting

So what you said is that Hatton was stopped easily when he stepped up but as I remember it he beat an ATG in Tszyu and gave Mayweather fits prior to the ref taking him out of the fight and frustrating him.

You guys can't see past the Pacquiao loss aparently.
