Not taking it out of context. I understand what they are saying and mean. What I'm really talking about are some fans (as some of the extreme "fanatics") who take things literally enough to become pests.

Sure they will "fight to the death" or "die on the ring", they are boxers!

I'm sure there are a lot of fighter out there that say it for show business but Margarito is the type that says it and means it. You can put a bullet into Margarito's kneecap inside the ring and he'd still come at you slowly with wide looping punches, mofo wont go down till you put a bullet in is head. There is no quit in that guy.

buahahahahah, dont make me laugh. Cotto was cheated by your boy Margarito who is nothing without his loaded wraps. He (Margarito) got exposed and his 1-3 record since being exposed tells the truth.

Cotto spanked that as$ like a cheap $2.00 whore. He could not counter Miguel's attack, he was clue less on how defeat him and his only resolve was to overacting, yelling in dispair and frustration.

Miguel was able to fight his demons, and is back and he donsnt need any plaster on his wraps.

True boxing fans understand that a fight can go either way, and accepts that on a clean fight. Haters, see a fight and will just call the losser a "bumb", "burned", "tomato can", etc. In the case of Miguel, see him as a coward or quitter which he is none of them.

In UFC/MMA when a figther "taps-out" to avoid injury fans dont rag on them as quitters or being scared. They support the fighter and let them recover to fight and win on another day. In boxing, when Margarito cheated Miguel, hatters and envious mothfuggers called him a quitter but fans supported/support him to see him avenge his loss.

Go suck some Margarito **** now.....

I'd say that a boxer should believe it in order to bring out the best in himself. If you go to the boxing ring while fearing that you might die or get heavily injured after taking a few punches, it's not the place to be in.

I don't think any sensible boxer would choose to die because once you get killed, the sense of pride or the money you can get out of a boxing match will be completely meaningless. You just say it as a way to convince yourself that you're prepared to go to any lengths in order to win the match, which a lot of professionals are willing to do.

Unfortunately there is no way of knowing whether you will get heavily injured or not while taking a beating. A boxer who doesn't quit after taking punishment, doesn't know if he will be severely injured either. If he did, the chances are that he would obviously choose not to take the beating without a chance of winning at the end.

As long as there's a chance, some people are willing to go on. It would be different if they went on knowing that they'll get injured for it without gaining anything. I doubt anybody would do it.

This is why we have referees, doctors and cornermen to determine when the risk of injury is too great in comparison to the small chance of winning. Which is what happened with Margarito's second fight with Cotto. Probably he would've kept plodding forward while taking the punches until the end, but it probably wouldn't have been worth it. They're tough decisions to make and cannot be left up to the boxers themselves, because they can't really put themselves in the situation to doubt their chances. It's a part of their job to have "heart".

Like posters have said, Margarito is one of the few who says this honestly. What kind of person smiles as they are being hit with punches that shorten your life? A badass mofo like Margarito, thats who.

its all about pride or machismo, or having "balls" thats what the fighters/boxers who say this thats what they mean. If your getting paid to perform in the best shape of your life in the sport of boxing destroying your opponent in the quickest or best way possible is understandable. I dont see anything wrong when a man says this and actually means it, its what fans love and cheer to. They are getting paid millions why should they perform any less.

                      ^^^^^^ THIS

This is totally what I think. The key of victory is outside of the ring, I don't care if you're a couragous C level fighter how takes punishment and is ready to die in the ring, I'm more impressed by an A level fighter that gave his soul and heart during training to dominate a fight.
