I don't like grading fighters or their resume, it is far too vague a measurement. But I would say Roy has a very good one. He fought Hopkins before his prime, but Roy was also not in his prime, I think a prime Hopkins is the only fighter that could have pushed Jones in his era. Toney was obviously a great win. I think he let himself down after 1999 up until Ruiz/tarver 1. In that period if he had fought michalcweski, a Hopkins rematch, and Calzaghe, that would have made his resume really great. But to be honest all those fights were tough to make and was definitely not all Jones fault. The DM fight should have definitely happened though

I hate to buck the trend, because Roy really was sensational at times.

But it’s hard to look at Roy’s resume and not think of the guys that he DIDN’T face.

          B-.

Ok, so how exactly is he overrated? Good boxer and Roy Jones in the same sentence just don't go. Are you new to boxing?

I'm glad you mentioned those fights because all 3 of those fighters deliberately dodged a matchup with Roy. For good reason too IMO. He could only face mandatories that made sense when those names wouldn't take the fights.

Just like Marion Jones, Roy Jones was a cheat and a steroid abuser, like Mosley his resume is worthless before he got caught.

Wake up guys, stop talking up cheats who robbed the fans of genuine, clean and fair contests.

Beat a prime Hopkins and prime Toney. Also won a heavyweight trinket by defeating John Ruiz.

That is generally not the biggest accomplishment, but when you take into consideration that he started at middleweight it makes it much more defining.

It is unfortunate that he didn't have any great American rivals to challenge him as he refused (for good reasons) to go overseas.

Superb talent in a weak era. Imagine if he had locked down MW. He would have probably had multiple wins on Hops, a win on a prime Trinidad, and maybe even a win on Oscar. With a win on Oscar he could have become the biggest superstar in boxing and maybe, although it is quite the stretch, fought Mayweather at 160 with Mayweather attempting to gain Roy's status. Not sure if he could have stayed skinny like Hops all those years though.

I give Roy a B+ for his two great wins vs. Hops and Toney.

Roy and Ali have the 2 best resumes of the modern era

Bernard Hopkins - Obvious ATG and Top 5 MW in history. Almost 20 years after the fact still no one has come close to beating Hopkins the way Roy did.

Eric Harding - coming off 2 very good wins against Montell Griffin and Antonio Tarver and most thought his style could give Roy a lot of trouble.... Roy Dominated him

Reggie Johnson - Gave James Toney hell and beat ATG Steve Collins. Roy Dominated him

Merqui Sosa - Sosa beat Prince Charles Williams twice, beat Glen Johnson and gave James Toney hell. Ring mag rated Sosa as the best chin in boxing... Roy stopped him in 2.

Thulani Malinga - Beat Nigel Benn, gave Eubank hell, He was considered to have an ATG chin ate Eubanks and Benns best punches, while Roy KO'd him in spectacular fashion

Julio Cesar Gonzalez - 1st guy to beat Dariusz of course Roy Dominated him

John Ruiz- Top 5 Heavyweight at the time Roy Dominated him

Jorge Vaca - beat #1 WW in the world Lloyd Honeyghan and beat Quincy Taylor twice. Roy KO'd him in the 1st round.

Jorge Castro - Roy Dominated him and few years later Castro was considered the best MW in the world.

Virgil Hill - Arguable a top 10 LHW of the last 40 years and yes while Virgil Hill was old when Roy made him sportscenter highlight. Virgil Hill proven he was still prime by going up to Cruiserweight and winning a title.

Mike McCallum - Obvious ATG but unlike Virgil Hill, McCallum was past his prime but still only a year removed from being a LHW champ. Roy dominated him like no else ever had.

Thomas Tate - C level fighter winning is nothing special but what is impressive is Roy KO'd him in 2 rounds. Tate's only KO loss in 50 fights including a fight against Julian Jackson who couldn't KO Tate.

James Toney - Another obvious ATG in his absolute prime. Roy moved up in weight and totally dominated.

Montell Griffin - 1st round KO over the guy who some fools actually thought gave Roy trouble in their 1st fight.
good stuff but roy did have major trouble with Griffin in their first bout
