You forgot Whitaker.Originally posted by Super_LightweightTyson isn't an all-time great, but I see your point and I agree.
Way too many asshats on here dis the likes of DLH, Hopkins, Jones, etc. It's ridiculous. These are the best fighters of our era and that alone makes them great.
Having been a boxer for 3 years I can say you are right. **** is a trite difficult. Too many arm-chair QB"S around here.Comment

If you listen to the online boxing community Roy Jones isn't great, Mike Tyson isn't great, Felix Trinidad isn't great, Bernard Hopkins isn't great and the list goes on. Why arn't these guys great? The usual answer is THEY NEVER FAUGHT NOBODY!!! Sometimes I think to myself...well who have you faught?
I mean I am not fighter but I am not the one saying that everybody didn't fight nobody. Shouldn't we give these fighters respect for being fighters? Reguardless of who they faught, to win titles on a professional level can't be easy. You know what? I don't think boxing is easy, even for great fighters. It requires alot on intangibles that most human beings don't have. All I am saying is, maybe we as boxing fans shouldn't critize championship caliber fighters careers so much. They were champions and are champions in a sport where the other guy is trying to knock their head off for 12 rounds.
I hear what your saying and I repsect what your saying but with that said I disagree.
I never want to get in the habit of overusing the term GREAT and I think sadly that is what many people do. Noty all fighters are great and taking that a step further not all champions are great either!
Now, I also think that it is unfair and just plain out of whack to say that people like us who follow the sport religiously cant be critical of fighters because we are not fighters oursleves or at least professional fighters.
If we cant be critical then how fun would it be to be a sports fans? what would these forums look like if was taboo to speak your mind?Comment

People can criticize fighters, I do to. But I am saying people shouldn't be so harsh. Like some seem to enjoy taking a whole career of work away off one fight.

Its hard to say he isn't because look at the legendary figure he has become over the last 20 years. He is going to be in the hall of fame. Only greats get in there.Originally posted by Super_LightweightTyson isn't an all-time great, but I see your point and I agree.Comment

Good post truth. Pretty much every fighter can be seen as overrated or underrated depending on who you talk to, and there are always things someone can do to nitpick a fighter. But when you sit back and look at it critically, these guys are all tough as nails and compete in a field that 70% of th world would be terrified to participate in.
Yes even Wlad is tough as nails...

hmm
Tyson is legendary and very popular but that doesn't make him great. There are boxers in the hall that are not all time greats, such as Mancini and Paz I believe. Tyson never beat one great fighter so it is not fair to call him an all-time great. He could've been, but he wasn't.Its hard to say he isn't because look at the legendary figure he has become over the last 20 years. He is going to be in the hall of fame. thing people need to understand is that a fighter like Tyson is great...that doesn't mean they are saying Tyson is as great as Ali...there isn't only ONE level of greatness in my view...
SOMETHING must be special about you if you make 20 straight defenses and go undefeated for 10+ years...
SOMETHING must be special about you to combine Foreman like KO power, Ali like speed, Frazier like torso movement, become undisputed, and dominate the HW division for a few years...
SOMETHING must be special about you to be a 2, 3, 4, 5 division champion with HOFers regardless of them being a weight class or two below you in the W column of your record...
again, when someone says Tito is great...that doesn't mean they are making comparisons to Sugar Ray Robinson...just that he was a special fighter in his era who stood out...
in the end, I think will all sports...people just hold sentiment to "the old timers" because the old guys happened to be involved with a particular time when things in that sport or entertainment field meant more...Comment

hmm
BINGO! All that nostalgic bull**** gets very tiresome. I can just imagine some posters here on their knees lighting candles in front of their altars to Ray Robinson or Muhammad Ali. Gotta tread lightly in order not to offend their "gods".in the end, I think will all sports...people just hold sentiment to "the old timers" because the old guys happened to be involved with a particular time when things in that sport or entertainment field meant more...
