Not Mayweather, Pacquiao, Martinez, Cotto, Marquez, or Khan; So who?....I'll throw my two cents in and state a case for who I think are valid candidates; i'll start with Nonito Donaire; only two bouts this year, shouldve been three had his career not been stalled due to his legal issues after the Montiel bout; regardless, he knocked out Montiel, a stern test in a pickem fight, in two rounds, and made it look easy in the process, clearly displaying faster hands and unfortunately for Montiel, destructive power; his second bout, this past October against Omar Narvaez, wasnt exactly a good fight by any standard, but intimidating an UNDEFEATED fighter, a world champion himself, and forcing him into a defensive shell for an entire fight, doesnt just happen for no reason, thats quite a feat; good points for why he should be FOTY; but ill give you two reasons why he wont be; a victory over Anselmo Moreno, a fight which was rumored to take place May 30th, wouldve got him FOTY without a doubt, but due to the aforementioned legal issues, it didnt take place, thus eliminating Donaire from the running and bringing the dark horse to light; FOTY should hands down go to BRANDON RIOS; he won the lightweight in thrilling fashion against Miguel Acosta, blasted out fringe contender Urbano Antillon, then beat up solid contender John Murray: all solid names on your resume; Rios broke through in 2011 and made his mark, establishing his legitimacy as a pound for pound stalwart in the future; who had a better year than him?
Fighter of the Year?
