    Lacy-Calzaghe (WARNING: SERIOUS DISCUSSION ONLY)

Having finally caught up with Lacy vs. Pemberton tonight, I find myself wondering what would happen in February with the touted Lacy vs. Calzaghe match-up.

What I’m actually looking for in this thread is the opinions of people who have actually SEEN both fighters, not kids from Junior High who only know Calzaghe from BoxRec and want to talk smack about him “not coming to America to prove himself” or “Lacy will pwn him”.

Having seen a reasonable amount of both fighters, I’m still not sure. Lacy has tremendous power at the weight, but has yet to face a fighter who hasn’t been shot or intimidated. I suspect that he’s so open he’ll be quite easy to take apart by the first boxer (as opposed to fighter) who has comparable power.

Is that Calzaghe though? Logic would suggest he’d know that bit more than Lacy, but he does appear to be entering the final stages of his career.

All that said, I can’t blame Calzaghe for not wanting to travel abroad. When Robin Reid (who did remarkably well in comparison with Pemberton) visited Lacy’s home turf he wasn’t even granted proper facilities, and saw Lacy enter the ring to Springsteen’s “Born In The USA” (seemingly oblivious to the fact that the song is supposed to be ironic) and build up a maelstrom of xenophobic rage that saw Reid face some of the harshest crowds ever and a far-from-impartial referee. While I have little doubt that the end result would have been the same even if Reid HADN’T been illegally KD’d the first time, it would have been nice to have found out for sure.

So… Lacy-Calzaghe. If you’re a poster who HASN’T seen both fighters in action, please exit the thread now. Thankyou.

I thought Pemberton was looking for a way out from the 1st second of the 1st round.

He didn't want to be in that ring one bit! And he looked terrified!

It wasn't as impressive victory as I've been hearing on this website all week.

Agreed. He got $150,000, which apparently he said he wanted to use as downpayment on a house.

"Take the money and run". Or "run and take the money".

Obviously Calzaghe in his younger years would easily defeat Lacy. But the big question is.. does Calzaghe have anything left??

It's no joke that Calzaghe must be emotionally scared (his wife had an affair with somebody else and split from Joe), his personal problems were very evident in his fight with Salem where he looked a shadow of his former self and looked as if his head was elsewhere (looked awful against Salem). He also didn't look very good against Veit (withstood too many Veit right hands), and then appeared quite slow against blown-up Ashira before breaking his hand.

Also, it's well known that Calzaghe has been really struggling to make 168 in these last few years and is barely managing it. (Calzaghe would stand a much better chance of beating Lacy if the fight was at 175).

So it all depends on whether Calzaghe can roll back the years or not, that's what it comes down to basically.

I know, I regret it now, but I couldn't help myself. Sorry Joe.

That's why his wife left him though, you know - he's always pulling out early.

lacy throws a lot of wild punches that leave him exposed or off balance, ie. that overhand right that comes choping down on his opponents head. if calzaghe can take advantage of this he would certainly give lacy a good run.

And Calzaghe has been very inactive these last few years whereas Lacy has been very active. So Lacy is sharper as well as fresher.

It would probably be better for both fighters if the fight happened @175lbs, but unfortunatly if the fight does happen it's 98% likely to happen @168lbs.

Reason being... Two belts involved "Unification Fight" = £££$$$!!!
