Can we at least all agree, Miguel Cotto was never really that good anyway?

  • Just a good fighter, good skills, but nothing flashy. He's a champ, nothing great. Never were a p4p top 10 worthy fighter.

    • Cotto was a great fighter.

He was a good boxer, his timing was perfect, he had surprising hand-speed and his agressive approach allowed him to break fighters down. The Mosley fight showed a great fighter and the first half of the Margo fight was flawless. He's now a little less agressive and slower, still a good fighter though.

      • Easily a HOF entry. Overrated depends on your expectations. He has faced everyone except for Floyd n now Martinez because of Top Rank and has only 2 losses both to alleged cheaters. Cotto is a top 10 legendary fighter in the past 15 years. Look at his fights n his record.

I think cotto could have(or still) taken floyd. His jab is great, and a great weapon against floyd. His power is good, he would just need to go to the body consistently. It would be a great fight. Floyd would probably be the favorite, but depending on how cotto approaches it, he has the skill to take floyd and break him down. A way better chance than de la hoya, hatton, ortiz, etc.

im just wondering why cotto has been using his right hand way less since the marg fight.

Cotto had a great career. He fought just about everyone there was to fight.

So yeah, his resume ****s on most fighters today.
Cotto ALWAYS welcomed the big names...thats why I respect him ALOT

IMO...again IMO....on the night he fought Shane, I dont think there was ANYBODY in the division that would've beaten him that night including Floyd...yea I said it and I'll say it again....I really think he would've beaten ANYBODY in the division that night!!!

He got in a car accident in 03 that tore up his right shoulder, seems to me it had gotten progressively worse with each fight. Recently he underwent surgery to remove cartilage from the old wound and since then has been throwing the right hand much more freely. He shoots it straight down the pipe evidenced in the Foreman and Mayorga fights. Lets see Pac have it now that he has 2 hands!! lol

I agree with a potential Mayweather fight. Can Floyd withstand a body assualt for long before his guard starts withering? I think that's the only way to wear down Floyd and open him up and Cotto's got the best body shot in the sport. Cotto also does well against boxers as opposed to guys that can smother him and slug it out. I'm just as excited as the next guy to see what new tweaks he brings into the Margarito rematch.

              • Come on man, Cotto was really good in his prime. Still is. Not Pacquaio or Mayweathers level but he is up there imo.

As a Miguel fan, I wouldn't like to see him in with Floyd, especially at this stage.

Miguel leaves himself open to straight's when he leans in with his punches, he'd walk onto that right hand all night. The little errors Miguel makes don't get punished in most fights, but against boxing's best fighter and counter-puncher, I worry he'd get outboxed most of the night. Miguel has also moved away from body shots.

And floyd leaves his bod open when his head is attacked. For instance when he got clocked by mosley, he brought his hands all the way up and exposed his body. I think miguel would have to do many things right(including a sustained body attack, applying smart pressure, stepping in with the jab, instead of just throwing it, etc), but imo he has the skill to hurt/beat mayweather. Im pretty confident in saying mayweather does not have the power to hurt cotto, just stun him at most. Mayweather may win, but it would be a long night for him. Cotto is a better boxer and has more power than de la hoya, hatton, ortiz, etc.

I would love to see this fight made. of course mayweather would have his moments, outboxing cotto, but at the end of the night, i think it will come down to who is the bigger warrior. May has been slowing down with his body movements, but he's been letting his hands go more to. It could be anybodys fight imo.

                    • And i also admit i could just be a delusional cotto fan. In my eyes tho, cotto has a very real chance against mayweather, and would be may's toughest/most legitimate opponent ever(or since corrales)
