He became very popular with boxing fans and experts couldnt keep his name out of their mouths. How much money did he make in the first fight compared to the second? I would say he improved his rep for people that knew him and built one for people that didnt really know him.

I respectfully disagree. Yes, Felix Sturm was just swept back away to Germany, as you properly put it, a situation that I lamented because I felt that he deserved better.

In America, however, the effort that Sturm put up against De La Hoya established his name in the country beyond where it was before. Prior to facing DLH, he was just seen as the man whom DLH would beat to get a belt on the way to facing Bernard Hopkins. Afterwards, he was a contender, a man who deserved better and had people on his wagon, pushing for him to get it.

I do, however, agree with your point of view... but I think it applies more to momentum than it does to reputation.

          here's a good answer

Vince Phillips' loss to Romallis Ellis before he KO'd Tszyu

his tough performance got him the title shot, and Cool Vince ca$hed in in a big way

I also agree. American fans looked at Sturm as a legitimate contender. They knew Sturm got robbed of the fight, but because of the money from Hopkins - DLH this fight was obviously rigged.

The fact that Sturm is a defensive-minded fighter didn't help his case however.
