    Ricky Burns defense

That high guard defense is obviously very effective if you also put up a good offense like Burns did.

That's the same exact defense Darren Barker was using against Sergio Martinez, but was not doing anything offensive. Same for Clottey against Pacquiao, and Narvaez against Donaire. Good defense, horrible offense. And the best way to fight that defense is keeping the opponent shelled up. For example Williams vs Wright, Pacquiao vs Clottey, Martinez vs Barker, etc.

I think Winky Wright used it the best.

I think Martinez should get more credit for stopping Barker because that defense is tough as nails to get through. Mayweather also used it against Judah and Mosley.

    Marlon Starling used it best.

I agree I ued to love watching Starling. He used that style very well.

As for Burns, his defense is dead average and if he goes anywhere near Brandon Rios he will suffer a real beating.

I thought Burn did a great job neutralizing Katsidis' left hand or hook which his dangerous punch. He circled to Kats' right and smothered or hold his left when inside.

I wasn't even fighting there, and I felt frustrated when almost every Katsidis punch just hit Burns gloves, cause I rooting for Katsidis. That was great defense, but what he did even better was fighting off that defense. It's hard to be defensive and win fights, people don't know how hard that is. That's why I respect Burns for that fight. Plus it was against a come forward fighter who was throwing a lot and putting a lot of pressure.

Oh absolutely Burns did a great job tonight. No doubt about it.

But, his defense is nothing to shout about at all, really.

I give him credit for the win tonight but I feel Katsidis has taken a beating too many at this point.

I disagree slightly. Although he was on the defence most of the time - come on, we're talking about Katz who's almost always the forward plodder) - he was great at his offense when he did it - he caught Katz a lot and you hardly see Katz on the backfoot like he was tonight in some places. Burns did pick it up a bit and a few points was the agressor.

What's next for Ricky Burns? I think he ducked Broner to take on the stylistically easier Katsidis. He should fight Kevin Mitchell or Antonio DeMarco.

I'd seriously consider him likely to outbox Rios and win a UD (let's just wait until Brandon batters Murray). I don't think Mitchell would last with Burns. He should fight Katz in a rematch and let Burns and Rios slug it out.
