Paul Williams: How good is he All-Time???

Assuming Paul Williams is past it since his KO loss to Martinez (Erislandy Lara schooled him and got robbed), how good was Paul Williams in his prime (2005-2010)???

His notable fights on his resume:

    Walter Matthysse- W TKO 10.
    Antonio Margarito- W UD 12
    Carlos Quintana- L UD 12
    Carlos Quintana- W TKO 1
    Winky Wright- W UD 12
    Sergio Martinez- W MD 12
    Kermit Cintron- W TD 4
    Sergio Martinez- L KO 2
    Erislandy Lara- W MD 12

In his prime, he had wins over Margarito, Quintana, Wright, Martinez, and Cintron. He had losses to Quintana and Martinez. His first fight since his loss to Martinez, he had a very controversial win over Lara, in which he really lost.

In his prime, how good was Paul Williams??? Personally, I would rank him better all time than Margarito, and on par with Cotto. Paul Williams isn't that good anymore, but a few years ago, he was really underrated.

I'd say top 10 for most shocking KO. In terms of skill he isn't even in the top 500, the guy is crap. 6'3" fighting at 147 and he has a loss against Quintana as well as his win.

The real issue is how severely underrated Lara is.

That was the robbery of the year...worse than Alexander.

eh - he'll be remembered as a "thanks for the memories" type guy, more for having heart and stamina than skill. . .

Personally, I dont consider him "great"..

But I do think that he will be remembered for being the most awkward, stamina having, entertaining fighter that we've seen in a long time..

I will admit that if he had title defenses, and successfully defended them, he may very well have been in consideration as an "all timer".. You dont have to be superbly skilled to win fights, you just have to win. He was never really super skilled, but with the tools he had, he used them to the best of his abilities. Outside of the losses he's gained, alot of his fights were won in an exciting, flashy, ko.

Dirk said he was a bum, so he's scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Paul Williams was always a very entertaining fighter. I don't think he's that high all time. He wasn't very skilled, but his style was great, imo. He always gave the fans great fights and I'll always be a fan of the punisher

I don't think Paul Williams is past it either. He just needs a new trainer. Someone like Joe Goossen or Robert Garcia would be a PERFECT trainer for him. I doubt he'll ever make the switch though. He seems like he's too loyal to his current trainer.
