With Diaz' background, I think they are settled on tactics&technique, the only thing that would worry me is the motivation factor, seeing how Solis showed up way too fat to his fights until the big Klitschko-bout, but I don't think motivation should be any problem for Cotto after what the cheater did in the first fight...
Im not downplaying the need for a gameplan im saying that any career trainer should be able to come up with a pretty good one being that Margarito is one dimensional and with the first fight available to study. The hard part is for Cotto to go out there and execute it because Margarito still has the workrate and chin to trouble Cotto.

I'm not a fan of such drastic changes 9 weeks before a big fight, but at least they solved it quickly and he got a good coach. Nothing against Manny Steward, but I do not think Miguel looked that impressive against an injured Yuri Foreman and an old Mayorga...
Sure, he left a lot in the ring in the Margarito- and Pacquiao-fights, but if he picked up one or two useful things from Manny, then all is well, and I believe Diaz is very qualified to be an upgrade.

Who has Diaz trained recently that gives you the impression he's a upgrade? Which top fighters has he trained period?

Emmanuel did more than having Cotto use his jab. He helped Cotto with balance issues and with overtraining beside helping him with the mechanics he lost after the ring assault.
The trainer He chose is another "behind the jab" trainer, very similar to Emmanuel in a lot fo ways beside been a spanish speaking trainer. Always that the trainer bases his work on boxing there should be NO trouble against the caveman's style without his plasters.
I don't like the sudden change, but at least is not in the middle of training. Cotto will take what HE got from Emmanuel and mix it up with the similar trainings from the Cuban trainer. I have NO mayor concerns about the upcoming fight, since is still about Boxing vs a physical fighter: A coward who wouldn't won the 1st fight without cheating.

He trained Solis and is in the camp of Jean Pascal and got a lot of credit for his recent success.

People are really exaggerating on boxing coaches, one could think there are only 2 or 3 good ones out there - the ones everyone knows and everyone seemingly wants to train 100 boxers at the same time aka "he needs Roach/****m/Nacho/Mayweather/Steward..."
The credentials of Diaz are very good and on paper, he could very well be an upgrade from Manny and the fights against Foreman and Mayorga. All depends on how he works with Cotto and whether he can develop a gameplan that Miguel can implement in the ring.

Diaz seems like a good trainer..

He'll probably have a minimal affect on the actual fight though.

Cotto trains himself. Trainers are overrated anyway. Someone at Cotto's level should know what to do already.

after thinking about this fight some more, I think cotto has all the skills to beat margarito, but the problem is that cotto gases, and that will give margarito the opportunity to make cotto quit on his knees again.

So cotto really only has 2 choices... increase his conditioning so he can fire off his combos and turn marg all night. Cotto should hire a good strength and conditioning coach for this.

or slowing down the fight with his jab and with some holding on the inside... Steward is great for this, too bad there are scheduling conflicts.

also, cotto needs a trainer to get him to stay off the ropes as that is where marg will land his best bodyshots, and cotto needs to look out for the right hand and uppercuts.

actually now that I think about it, it's pretty simple what cotto has to do and the cuban guy should be able to give him the correct gameplan to win.

Isn't Emanuel Stewart on Cintron's corner on the rematch vs Margarito? and we all saw te outcome of that rematch, Margarito by KO earlier than the first fight.

Cotto has look a lot slower ever since loss to Margarito, I have not seen any inprovement realy with Stewart. He was just fead a disable pillow puncher in the rabi, and a drunk punching bag in the form of a boxer in Mayorga.

Margarito by KO earlier than the first fight.
