Not that I'm saying Cortez isn't sh**. He definitley doesn't seem capable of refereeing a championship fight effectively anymore.
From what it looked like to me, Ortiz had his eyes on Mayweather which caused him to miss the somewhat reserved gesture that Cortez made. I believe Cortez has been doing the job for so long that it has become a chore to him, and that's when it can get dangerous. He should have been all over the situation from the beginning and made it clear that he would not stand for any retaliations, perhaps even made the fighters touch gloves to avoid a situation like this taking place.

Easy to say on hindsight of course and if it was only this one occasion we could give Cortez a pass but over the years Cortez has been losing control as a referee and this was another case where he could have done better.

Cortez does get worse with each fight now it seems.

        Mayweather should be disqualified

It was clearly a matter of legality: was Mayweather's punch during an official time?? Definitely NOT for two reasons: 1)The referee has not issued verbal instruction; and 2)In fact, the referee was JUST ABOUT to signal the timekeeper to start the signal, i.e., the first punch was NOT on an official time.

Yeah Cortez should kind of go away just like Larry Merchant. They both give the boxing HOF a bad name.

Oh Please! I heard him instruct and give hand signal

He can say what he wants, but I saw the tape. He said 'let's go' and he turned to Ortiz and gave the hand signal.

keith kizer, ringside officials, and ortiz's manager all acknowledge the legitimacy of the knockout. why are people still arguing about this? desperation. leave the grassy knoll experts alone, they only want the attention.

Exactly. I mean its Wednesday already. On a side note, when was the last time mainstream media talked about boxing on Tuesday or Wednesday?

Cortez is clearly on Mayweather's payroll. I didn't know gesturing with your hands was the official way to restart a fight. Also i was under the impression that when a fight is going on the Ref's eyes should be on the two fighters the entire time. WHen you watch the replay you can clearly see Cortez's eyes towards the side of the ring when he supposedly gave them the go ahead to fight. This fight was total bull**** should have been a DQ.

For ****s sake, this has been explained, drawn and closed numerous times now. Time was IN! Signals were given! Cortez said "Let's go!". What more do you want?
