The reason that most champions don't fight outside of their country is because as the champion they are likely the more established, biggest draw and so it makes sense to have the fight on home soil. Zaveck is fighting abroad because the same isn't true of him: Berto is the bigger draw (well, he has no fans, but HBO are determined to continually throw money at him) and Zaveck is from a country where boxing generates a lot less money than in the US.

Zaveck is taking this fight because it offers him the most money. Berto is taking this fight because him, HBO and DiBella see it as an easy way to get him a belt and yet again try to build him up by having him face hand-picked opposition.

No real reason to give anyone involved much credit really, despite how much they're trying to give themselves.

Umm, you do know Zaveck draws 30,000 people + in his home town and has all of his country behind him?

berto has 10 fans that will show up to see him fight with the rest being free promoter tickets.

Dont be surprised to see more Slovenians in the crowd than Americans.

zavec made 50k€ + sponsorship money for fighting a bum delgado. prob around 100-150k$ overall. the fight made 250k tv views average in slovenia, prob getting some of that tv share too (no it's not ppv).
you tell me if that's bad money.

i'm not sure what he will get for fighting berto, but it's most likely 2-3x more, prob around 500k$. at least i remember senchenko asked for that much to fight canelo.
the question is does berto get 1 mil$ again??
if zavec wins, i expect him to fight randall bailey in slovenia.
and yes our fans are one of the best in europe, you can expect those 100 fans to make one hell of a show in beau rivage.
i still remember when our soccer team played on the world cup, those 1500 fans could be heard on a stadium of 30.000 ...

Lol at the thought of Slovenians becoming a boxing nation suddenly. They always cared much more for skiing and alpine sports and even athletics. They are rarely the types to be very engaged about boxing. But ofc, when u have a champion in boxing, everything changes.

there will be around 100 slovenian fans in biloxi (80 is the official number, but there are likely some coming at the last minute or privately). i'm sure there would be a lot more, but we also have an european basketball championship here right now (in lithuania), and basket >> boxing still.
