There's no question about the speed of Roy Jones Jr., he's in a class by himself in that department. But his boxing style relied heavily on his reflexes to pull everything off with astonishing swiftness. He wasn't really all that good of a boxer, its more his speed allowed him to flagrantly disregard the orthodoxy of boxing's fundamentals. In many ways he created his own rules when he laced up a pair of gloves.
He was faster than Mayweather but not nearly as smart. Mayweather isn't just fast for the sake of being fast, he's quick and accurate. Roy would throw clusters of punches at his opponents, while Mayweather is much more economical with his. Speed that's disciplined trumps raw quickness eventually. Look at what happened to Roy when he slowed down, he didn't have enough defensive technique to keep himself out of harms way, so he just got pummeled.Comment
