  • No doubt that referee took a bribe! Awful, he should be banned from officiating prize fights.

However the 11th rd was a low blow and it should not have been called a knockdown, that is the one punch which might have warranted a point deduction.

The ref constantly explained to Abgbeko that pulling Mares head down was the cause of the body punches going low and Agbeko should stop pulling Mares head down. If Agbeko would of stopped pulling Mares head down he would not of received low blows. Most fans seem to forget that belt line punches are legal. Fans immediate reaction when seeing a punch land on the trunks automatically assume it is a low punch just because it landed on the trunks. But usually the replay will show it landed on the trunks, but on the belt line of the trunks. It does not surprise me that the moron's on Showtime would forget about this. Some fighters wear their trunks high and when they do more punches that seem low are landed on their trunks, but are legal and Agbeko's trunks were a little bit high.
How many punches are those 20%? Most boxing writers saw at least 20 low blows. You said 20% were actually low. So at least 4 or 5 punches were low based on your analysis. It doesn't matter if intentional or not but if he hits low, their should be a warning. Intentional low blows are automatic deduction or dq. Mora should have warned after the first and second low blows and deducted on the third and fourth low blows.

In the 11th round, their could be a reason to disqualify Mares. I remember seeing two consecutive low blows. The first one caused Agbeko to cover his crotch with both hands. So theirs no way he was pulling Mares down because both his hands were down in front of him. Then Mares hit him again with a low blow. I don't say Mares intentionally did it. But IMO i saw two consecutive low blows.

I'm not even considering how many rounds both fighters won. The fact that according to your opinion 20% were actually low, that takes away a lot from a fighter. The cleanest and most damaging shot i saw was Agbeko's in the fourth which buckled Mares' knees. I wonder how many more Agbeko would have made again if he was not weakened by low blows.

Agbeko's defensive style was even designed to protect his crotch. I saw Mares hitting Agbeko's gloves while covering his crotch in an early round. Maybe in the third.

I'm not saying Mares intentionally fought dirty. I can't read people's mind. All the blame should be on the ref. Definitely very bad officiating by Mora. The worst I have seen. I can't blame others for saying he was paid.

If Mora did a good job, Agbeko should have won tonight.
But then, if Mora warned Mares very early in the fight, Mares could have adjusted and aimed for the sides.

          Bottomline:
FIGHT FANS WERE ROBBED WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY GOOD EXCITING FIGHT WITH FIREWORKS EVERYWHERE

          • Immediate rematch. No other option if anyone in charge cares AT ALL about boxing. I had it 6-6, and I didn't count the low blow knockdown in the 11th, because no one with any conscience should.

I'm not going to rail on Mares, because he fought a good fight, and like any fighter if he isn't being penalized for doing something he isn't going to stop. But Agbeko was completely, irrefutably, and unfairly screwed over. There's no telling how much an effect getting hit with 2 or 3 low blows at least each round did to him.

This was a pretty good fight that won't be allowed to be remembered as so because of a corrupt referee.

              • Talk about scrambled eggs agbeko had an omlet. Hope the Ag man doesn't plan on having any more kids. Give the belt to Mora he won it. Talk about bells ringing and ***els singing. Agbeko had a musical choir concert in his shorts.

                  • The referee was terrible and I am still not sure if it was more of a shame to hear Abner Mares defending the ref or to hear the referee actually defending himself.

The ref defending himself is more shameful, but I hear you. It would take a special person to say "yeah, I think I lost the fight but the ref gifted me with the win. I can't accept this belt, so Agbeko, hold onto it, bro." As if belts were merely physical, and not connected to sanctioning bodies.

Absolutely shameful, and reflects horribly on all involved, Mares included. I have a hard time blaming the fighter though, unless someone wants to argue that there was a preordained plan for Mares to hit him low, and Mares was in on it. A bit far fetched, but then again, it is boxing (not that I believe such a situation is to a degree greater than 1% plausible).

My takeaway though is to not blame the fighter. He was the one in the ring, it isn't as though he had the same view everyone else did. Probably in his mind, he just got done fighting his heart out, even though, imo, in a losing effort (if there was proper officiating that is). Who knows, if he watches the tape he may even have a different opinion, or he might do as most people would and display self-bias.

Nevertheless, I don't discount the possibility that Mares was somehow directly connected to the scam, however I find it extremely unlikely. As such, I have a hard time blaming him.
