I don't understand the connection. Because, now is different from then. Just cuz' he could make it 2 years ago. Doesn't mean he can make it now...Right? And, that should be common sense.

And, I'm not saying he can or can not.

But, saying he made the weight 2 years ago so duh he should be able to make it now. Makes no sense to me. I'm sorry.

Maybe he can, maybe he can't. I don't know. All I know is that for the last year, 2 fights. He has been fighting at 154.
My point is that from the time he fought Pac to the time he fought Foreman, there's no way his body grew to the point where he couldn't make 147 when he just came in at 145 in great shape. His motives for moving up had nothing to do with struggling to make weight. I can also mention how always comes in below the limit. Margarito on the other hand came in at the limit for Garcia, blows up to 170+ and it's a known fact that he can't make 147. How would a catch weight benefit him in any way? It would certainly benefit the smaller fighter in Cotto, who will likely rely on his boxing skills. And even if for some reason he can't make 147 anymore, he can certainly make 150 easily and could possibly have more power at that weight.

Body aging is a gradual process. If Cotto really grew that much, then who's to say Margo's body hasn't grown out of 150 after a second long layoff? There's just absolutely no way Margo could benefit from a catch weight. If there is, I'm missing something and you guys should fill me in.

U got one big guy, one smaller guy, they pick a comfortable weight in the middle and we get to see the fight. Unless your one of the three people left on earth who actually cares about the alphabet belts and in what manner they are "won" then who gives a ****? I dont care what weight they fight at, as long as they both come into the ring in tip top shape and perform up to the best of their respective abilities, i ve got no problem with it. Just put on a show worthy of 60 bucks, thats all i ask for.
Exactly... Most of these people bit**ing about catchweights most probably didn't know that.

damn dude fan boy mode huh? uhm ive been watching boxing far longer than you I guarantee and you can ask anyone who knows a thing or two but 15lbs is up there for anyone, like I said dude obviously boxers can work that to their advantage but for a guy who was a 147 lifer to be coming in at 165lbs is its own story. No worries tho we have #2 to look forward to
It is definitely at the top end of the scale even for a large welter but 12-14 is reasonably common at around JMW. I dont think that Martinez would necessarily kill himself to make 154 and I bet he would put on more than that.

The article didn't actually mention who requested the catchweight, but it is hard to imagine why Margarito would. I'm guessing that Arum wants his boy Cotto to have every chance at this because he is easier to sell than Marg at this point. Margarito is done.

              Seriously, WTF?
I happen to think the opposite. I believe that's a worse weight for Cotto, not to mention Margarito as well.

I don't think Cotto GAINS as much as he LOSES by going BELOW 154 to be honest. He hasn't fought at around welterweight since November 2009. To think he can cut weight that far is asinine.

EDIT: Never mind, boxerdood gave a valid argument.

This is a b!tch move by Cotto if he's behind it. I feel like it's really Steward, but Cotto is still letting it go down even if that is the case.

A champ asking for a catch weight? This better be a joke..

Love it!! I think Cotto should be fighting at 147, but he's nice enough to let cheato go up to 150. Cotto's calling the shots, deal with it.
