Boxing uses weight divisions for a reason. The amount of muscle-mass and conditioning that you can take into a fight is strictly determined at the weighin, fight-night weight (or rehydration weight) will make no difference at all, and can even be detrimental.
I wonder how truly great fighters used to fare back under the original divisional system? You know, the system back when there was only one belt so you could not cherry-pick an easy title and then refuse to defend?
The system back when they had same-day weighin's and it was reasonably common-place for a champion to jump a division in search for greatness?
The system where in order to reach for greatness you would have to fight a genuine champion at his best weight, and a small welter fighting a big middleweight would be outweighed by 15-20 lbs?
The system used back when fighters did not have fans who acted like their mommy, trying to protect them from every sc**** and bruise?
Many great fighters made their mark by going up and fighting as the smaller man. A latter-day example would be like Mayweather did against Corrales, Castillo, and to a certain extent even Baldomir and Hoya. Even Martinez did that against Williams and Pavlik.
Mayweather and Pacquiao should not be compelled to take that fight, but Martinez should not be castigated for asking. Pac and May are clearly the biggest payday in boxing, hard luck for them if they dont like getting their feathers ruffled.
