no he's not
he's fun to watch but nothing special about him at all
he has lost some of his reputation nowComment

He's a beast, and consistently underrated in the skills department. A lot of his shots aren't straight nor textbook, but he knows how to time them and make them land. His punching power might be overrated, but he gets just about everything he can out of what he was given.Comment

Well, i will say ONE thing for this supposedly great referee. I don'r think that he understands infighting at all. And we can be certain that any fight where he is the 3rd man is bound to be focussed more on HIS footwork and hand gestures, than on the fighters themselves. Well, not really, but one might think so from the way he tries to attract and intrude.
Generally, fighters want to fight, and unless one fighter is hurt and needs to hang on, they will most often break, themselves so as to be able to score with punches.
Take your 1890's armchair boxing opinions back to a century+, where they belong, old buffoon. Cortez is a fine referee and is consistent with his implementation of his interpretation of the rules. Just like Steve Smoger is consistent with letting fighters blast away at each other with unrelenting ferocity on the inside, fight-in, fight-out. Just because you don't agree with Cortez' interpretation, doesn't make him any less of a referee, it simply means there's a shift in perspective.
Your worldview is one skewed and misguided by a racist ideologue which looks down on other races - FACT. We all know what you believe about your race, aye old chap. *wink*Comment

yeah, maidana really showed heart with getting back up and making it all the way through to the fight. i remember yelling at the tv in the 10th, "you got him, finish him!" haha, what an entertaining fight it was. maidana isn't the most skilled guy, but he makes for an exciting fightComment
