      is overrated???
Yes, would Roach still be this amazing trainer if it wasnt for Manny?

Freddie Roach is a "Hollywood" trainer, he takes established fighters. Anyone can look good if you got Manny as a fighter.

How many fighters has Freddie actually bred? Raised them from nobody amateurs to world champs?

You wanna know why he's a Hollywood trainer? His own gym wasnt even his, it was Mickey Rourke's, an ACTOR who he was training and gave him the gym after he stopped. Then he got Virgil Hill from his old mentor Eddie Futch, plus he trains countless MMA fighters, celebrities.

His gym is like a fast food restaurant, training like 30 fighters instead of focusing on a few and giving them the time they deserve.

I think a great trainer needs to have a few characteristics:

          1. Technically sound. Know his boxing obviously.

          2. Teaching ability. There's many trainers that know their stuff but don't have the ability to convey that info to their fighters, patience plays a big part.

          3. Motivator. Be able to push a fighter to his limits and bring the best out in him.

          4. Scout. Be able to scout your opponent and implement a game plan to beat him.

          5. Protector. Some of you may think nothing of this one but IMO it could be the most important. Be able to care about your fighters and look out for them knowing what fights to take and which ones to pass up on. That can make or break a young fighters career.

          So who is the best?

          A. Robert Garcia (over 8 world champs from scratch)
          B. Freddy Roach (4 time trainer of the year)
          C. Nacho Beristain (15 world champs trained and HOF member)
          D. Emanuel Steward (HOF member and Hearns trainer)
          E. Ronnie Shields (TOY 2003 worked with Juan Diaz and Vernon forest)
          F. Roger Mayweather (trains Floyd Jr)
          G. Floyd Sr. (Started with Floyd Jr and trained Oscar)
          Totally agree on this part.

Sr is a good trainer, but he lack the patience to really teach his fighters.

Good post. You make some valid points. I think Freddie's a terrific trainer (really, all of the men listed are top-notch), but much of his reputation is based on image. Roach has marketed himself well, and managed to cash in like few trainers ever have. Who can blame him?

Floyd Sr is a great trainer but he's a taskmaster and everything has to be his way which rubs fighters wrong.

Nacho all day. The fact that he was tied with Garcia before I voted is a disgrace.

not just anyone can make it in the fight game as the countless number of olympic calibur fighters whose skills didnt translate properly in the pro ranks wil attest to.

With that said is it really such a bad thing that roach played the law of averages to his advantage as opposed to putting all his eggs in 1 basket as with most trainers? (i.e: ann wolf, jack loew) who by all other standards are also excellent trainers.

One could also argue that roach is a far bigger asset to his community by opening his gym doors to the public and making membership rates affordable compared to other gyms only open to developing fighters that dont necessarily get any farther than freddie roach fighters who dont get any personal attention for a much higher rate.
