Sergio Martinez is overrated.

Sergio went out and fought Paul Williams only AFTER Williams was exposed by Carlos Quintana. Williams is extremely vulnerable to an overhand left and Quintana showed that over and over again in Williams' first loss. Many argue that Sergio should have won that match. I agree, but he lost.

Sergio then faced off against Kelly Pavlik. Pavlik had gained notoriety by beating Jermain Taylor, but had his confidence destroyed in a loss to Bernard Hopkins. Pavlik was doing well in the beginning rounds, but Sergio found a way to get into the fight and once he enjoyed some success, all could see the defeated look on Pavlik's face. Pavlik all but gave up before the fight was over and relied on one big shot to try to turn things around. Sergio won.

Then Sergio rematched with Williams. It was a quick affair, as I suspect Martinez' trainer had a plan to fully utilize an overhand left counter. He KO'd Williams and got revenged.

Now with all of that said, how can ANY of you make a case for Sergio Martinez being a P4P fighter? How can he be considered anything but the #1 jrMW?

Honestly, the man has 2 notable wins in his entire career. We aren't even factoring in his KO loss to Margarito and his draw with Cintron.

Two wins against two fighters who were questionable at best doesn't make him special. The only reason that Martinez' win over Pavlik was ever viewed as a big deal was because Pavlik's match against Hopkins was a non-title match, which allowed Pavlik to hold on to his belts and then later lose them to Sergio. That is no accomplishment of Pavlik's as he was thoroughly dominated by Hopkins.

I am not trying to tear Sergio Martinez down. I like the guy and enjoy watching him box. That doesn't mean however that I am going to lie for him.

I've said it before and I'll say it again and again ... to be considered elite and a top P4P boxer you must have LONGEVITY. You must not only have longevity, but longevity at the top.

Every time a boxer wins a big match this days he's automatically "P4P". That term is a piece of **** these days. Its a buzzword meant to drum up excitement in a sport that isn't thriving like it once was.

If every time a boxer won over someone who had a big name, Jean Pascal should be one of the most significant names in boxing today. He beat both Dawson and Hopkins. We all know that Pascal isn't one of the most significant names in boxing.

People need to stop bandwagon jumping. We like great fights and we like explosive KO's but hailing a man as great when he's won only 2 fights over opposition that had been exposed recently is not the kind of catapulting win that would have him land at the top spot. IMO, Jean Pascal's wins had more significance than Martinez' wins.

Actually, Martinez was a very late replacement opponent for Williams after Pavlik backed out with Williams forthe second. So the notion that Martinez "only fought Williams after Quintana exposed him" is ridiculous considering Williams was becoming a big name and Martinez was basically a nobody in their first fight.

I agree. Martinez's recent opponents (Pavlik, Cintron, and Williams) all called him out. Had that been the other way around, I'm pretty sure their fights would never have happened.

he fought 3 of floyds leftovers plus most of his fights were at catch weight and to top it of most of them were from top rank.
