Personally, id favor trout and dizzy over cotto and make lara pickum with cotto. People are gonna see real soon that cotto's not built for 154. (whatever fight he has after margs).
You make a good point about Cotto at 154...he just got there. Guys like Trout and Dzinziruk have a shot, but I still think he's the top guy at the weight. I also think Miguel hasn't got too many big fights left in him. When I say I favor Cotto over Lara, I mean now, as in Erislandy's next opponent. (Though that's not likely to happen.)

Cotto, if he makes it past margs isnt gonna fight anyone but big money next anyway. Alvarez, chavez jr, floyd, manny... Something like that.

That's what I'm saying. I'm talking purely "fantasy," as a fight with an intact Miguel seems very unlikely. I compare Lara with Cotto simply as a way to try to figure where Erislandy fits in the division. Whether Miguel makes it past Marg or not, it might very well take even more out of Cotto's ring life.
I'm not sold on him he won the fight but that was a very damaged Pwill. You can't bounce back after a K.O loss like that.
I agree that P. Will didn't seem himself, and he's probably a little faded, but calling him "very damaged" seems excessive. As for no one being able to bounce back after a "KO loss like that," it's been done. Of course, there are other examples of people who were never the same. Usually what happens is that the damaged fighter can't take punishment, or a single good shot, anymore. Williams took good shots all night long and fought on. The argument could be made that the Martinez KO didn't harm his fighting ability.

I agree 100%. People forget he had the same type of loss to Quintana a couple of years before he even fought Martinez. He took flush shots from Lara all night so talk that his chin was cracked were false as well. Now im not saying he doesnt have some wear and tear but the idea that he is shot seems to be greatly exaggerated.

A much less reactionary and less sensationalist opinion is that pwill really just didnt show his regular snap on his punches, heart, and determination. Most likely is that he just doesnt hage his heart in it any more and he needs that the way he fights (plus his trainer sucks).
Is he that good, or is Paul now that bad? Who in the top 10 at 154 do you think can beat Williams now that you wouldn't have said could last week?
neither one..
Sometimes, you fight against someone that makes you look ALOT better than what you really are. Williams is hittable, Lara took advantage of it. Any counterpuncher would. Its easy to throw Lara up in the rankings (and the Ring Magazine inexplicably has Lara at #5 @154lbs) because of one good outing, but im 100 percent not convinced that he is as great, second coming of Jesus boxer as people are claiming at this time.
Williams looking relatively bad against lefties is nothing new. So its no surprise that he looked less than stellar against Lara. The best showing against a lefty that Williams had was Martinez I; that was the most exciting, thrilling, toe to toe fight Martinez EVER engaged in. I still think that Williams has more than a few of those left, he needs a new trainer to go any further.
YOure only as good/bad as your last fight. I dont think either fighter is as great/terrible as some claim.
I really dont think Lara can beat all 154lber's, but I think he could hang with most...

Or that it's the same old paul williams vs a southpaw. Has absolutely no clue how to deal with them and his trainer attempted to make zero adjustments.
That's my opinion as to why he looked like ****. He didn't have the regular "snap" on his punches because Lara rarely allowed him to land cleanly, only landing 19% of his shots. Lara would move backwards, set up the left, fire & land it, and clinch when they got close.
Same old Williams to me.
Now put him in the ring with an orthodox fighter that isn't a spectacular counter puncher and I bet he looks good.
