Comments Thread For: Williams vs Lara: A Little ******** in Atlantic City

By Cliff Rold - “Eyes Wide Shut” isn’t just the name of an odd Stanley Kubrick flick. It’s also an apt description of the events of November 20, 2010 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. One shot and then the image that has stayed with everyone who saw it, the photo stills of the defeated, separated from his senses, asleep with his eyes open staring blankly across the ring floor.

For his sake, former Welterweight titlist and Middleweight contender Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KO) can’t afford a reprise when he returns to the scene of crime this Saturday.

For his sake, former Cuban Olympian Erislandy Lara (15-0-1, 10 KO) will be shooting for homage to last fall.

Both men are ******** big this Saturday. [Click Here To Read More]

Ever since this fight was announced, I've wondered who's taking the bigger risk: Williams or Lara? P. Will has more to lose. He's coming off the unhappy end of a spectacular KO. If he loses to Erislandy, his career might be officially stalled. Lara, on the other hand, is taking a big step up in comp. That takes some guts. But even if he loses, Erislandy can safely continue his career -- provided he gives a solid performance. Paul doesn't have that luxury. The risks and rewards for both men promise an exciting clash!

    WAR Lara!

I can't make any predictions or significant comments until I see Williams fight again.

When a fighter gets knocked out like Paul did, there are questions that can only be answered in the ring.

I want to see if his loss has made him gun-shy or will he still engage his opponents in close quarters with his high work rate.

I really wonder what his trainer worked on and what changes they've made. I've always felt that Williams leaves himself open when he locks in his elbow, drops his hand and delivers his hooks. Its a bad habit that a lot of tall fighters have.

I believe that Sergio's trainer saw this mistake a they worked to capitalize on it. If you watch the replay, Sergio knew the exact time and placement for the counter. I don't think Sergio can beat Williams if Paul fixed that problem.

Quintana was able to consistently land on Paul as well because Paul drops his hands after he throws.

I think that Paul's trainer needs to fix these problems, or Paul needs to find another trainer. Williams has NEVER had a better than average defense. This needs to change if they want Paul Williams to go to the next level.

I'm rooting for Paul to get back on the scene. I'd love to see him have longevity. The guy is still green after all.

The article says that Williams is 1-1 against Sergio Martinez & that in 1 more fight with Martinez he could redeem himself..1st he has to get past Lara, IF he could get past Lara..& Even thou that 1st fight against Martinez was close, I thought Martinez won & in the 2nd fight it wasn't even a contest cause to Me Martinez got the 1st round & annihilated Williams in the 2nd..When Williams got beat by Quintana in the 1st fight, it was clear Quintana won & in the rematch Williams knocked Quintana down 3 times in the 1st to win by KO, yet when Quintana & his people asked for a rubber match, Williams people said it didn't make any sense to fight a 3rd time cause of the way Williams beat Quintana in the 2nd fight..So if that's the case, then it wouldn't make any sense for Martinez to fight Williams again..

Personal opinions don't matter. It was a close fight that could have gone either way.

But Williams officially got the win over Sergio in the first fight, those are the facts and that's what it will say in the record book.

I agree, a lost would set any of these 2 fighters back..A defeat after a not so good performance in the a draw against Carlos Molina will set Lara some what back, but a lost now against the good but not so experienced(as a professional)Lara after he got annihilated in 2 rounds(in his previous fight) will seriously set Williams back to the point where he would basically have to start from scratch..

The Molina fight should've gone in the books as Lara's first loss...but it didn't. Erislandy looked bad in that gift draw. However, down the line, not too many people will remember or even care...if Lara gets back on track. For Paul, things are a little different. P. Will needs a win now.

Pwill is a great champ, hes done well. This should be a good fight. Wladimir vs Povetkin should be next for the HW championship. Hes not the champ till he beats a klitschko.

Lol you just dont like Cubans and Mexicans your a very ignorant little girl its also clear your still mad Paul ko your boy El Indio. P. Will has his hands full on saturday its not going to be that easy to beat Lara who is a counter puncher with a decent punch. Williams gonna get hit for sure, lets just see how he takes it. Martinez did KTFO of Williams but if that punch landed on most middleweights they would probably drop too. Should be a good competitive fight and props to both for stepping up and fighting each other this is what boxing is all about.
