Canelo vs Cotto, if Margarito falls through...

The twelfth round knockout scored by the new idol of Mexican boxing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Saturday night at the Arena VFG, left the door open to catapult him to the fight of his dreams in his short career. There is already talk that his next opponent could be Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Angel Cotto, tentatively on September 15 somewhere in the United States. Cotto has been penciled in to fight Antonio Margarito in December, but that hasn’t stopped speculation of a possible showdown between the two 154lb champions.

Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez revealed that there is a good possibility to carry out such a fight, so that’s why he’s going to sit down and talk to Reynoso, Chepo and Eddy, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s managers to bring about a fight.

“Sure, it might be. It would be a great choice for Saul, but we will see. We have to wait anyway,” the vice president of GBP said at the end of the fight in which the Guadalajaran Alvarez made the first defense of his WBC super welterweight title.

This would be very similar to Trinidad-Vargas and Cotto would give that kid a beating. Cotto has too much skill and too much experience for Alvarez.

Lol I dunno bro. Miguel's older, less skilled, less accomplished brother managed to hurt Saul in their fight.

This is a pretty cut and dry fight to predict the winner IMO. Miguel by stoppage mid to late.

Cotto stops him in 10. Like somewhat said this would be simiar to titi vs Vargas.

And is only competitive because Cotto has taken a couple of beatings, prime totally destroy el colorao de jalisco!!

I think canelo, wont improve much more, like people think!!!

It's amazing to me how biased some of you are on here. Stop looking at things with your heart and use your brains, if you even have any.

Cotto isn't the same fighter but Canelo is young.....that makes for a GREAT fight IMO. Canelo is very strong and throws a lot of combinations. Cotto is a warrior who has been there with the best but we have seen his decline.

I agree, I think this is a 50/50 fight right now, people are either writing Cotto off or underestimating the young kid from Jalisco.

i think this wouldnt be the best move for Canelo. Cotto is just too experienced and Canelo doesnt put the kind of pressure that we saw Cotto struggle with before.
This would just turn into a heavy handed combo throwing back and forth that i could see cotto running away with.
