The twelfth round knockout scored by the new idol of Mexican boxing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Saturday night at the Arena VFG, left the door open to catapult him to the fight of his dreams in his short career. There is already talk that his next opponent could be Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Angel Cotto, tentatively on September 15 somewhere in the United States. Cotto has been penciled in to fight Antonio Margarito in December, but that hasn’t stopped speculation of a possible showdown between the two 154lb champions.
Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez revealed that there is a good possibility to carry out such a fight, so that’s why he’s going to sit down and talk to Reynoso, Chepo and Eddy, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s managers to bring about a fight.
“Sure, it might be. It would be a great choice for Saul, but we will see. We have to wait anyway,” the vice president of GBP said at the end of the fight in which the Guadalajaran Alvarez made the first defense of his WBC super welterweight title.
