Is Ortiz a Poor mans Cotto?

I don't think Ortiz and Cotto fight all the similarly to one another, although I really can't put my finger on the differences between the two. Ortiz does seem like he targets the body less than Cotto does (although when the Mayweather Jr.-Cotto fight was the fight to make, Cotto seemed to have abandoned his body attack for the most part compared to its frequency when he was a prospect on the way up). I think Cotto actually might be a little quicker than Ortiz, although Ortiz seems to excel in his timing both offensively and defensively (minus the random screw ups, like the hard knockdown he sustained against Berto).

People who are diming on Ortiz's skills need to get a clue... the guys is very technically solid, and seems to have great presence of mind in determining when is the best time for him to attack, and when it would be detrimental to his chances of winning the round/fight to go at his opponent. I thought his fight with Berto was one of the most complete performances I have seen from a fighter in recent years, except for that hard knockdown he took... although he made up for that mistake in the same round, so it's hard to criticize him for that too much.

Great idea, does Mayweather get to drain him to 145 for the fight?

Yes and then come in 2lbs heavy @ 147lb for the weigh-in

I love how all the Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. fans have their little jabs down pat... sometimes they are annoying when they fight, but sometimes, like the above example, they can be quite entertaining.

Ortiz is a south paw Gatti with less heart. Droppable, fairly speedy, hittable and likes to war it, unless it's Maidana.

I totally disagree with this assessment. Ortiz has pretty damn good skills, and is a lot quicker and more technical than Gatti could have ever dreamed of being.

Ortiz has his own style, southpaw, kind of bouncy, technically he is OK, and has some speed. He hits like a bull, a big guy. I could tell he was a big guy when he came back at 142 or 144 after the Maidana fight.


He bounces a lot, and is predictable when he attacks. He throws decent combo's but is very open to getting hit.

His chin is oK, but he does get dropped. His heart van be questioned, but he is no longer such a young boy. Nor is Mayweather that hard a hitter.

His speed, is OK, a few figters talk of his speed, but he isn't anywhere near maywrather speed.

What I don't like about Ortiz is his mentality. He is weak, hangs out with geeks it seems, and id too goofy and happy. When he got hurt by Naidana, he quit. He let the lead go slowly vs peterson and wasn't even that upset when t was a draw, which Ifeel he won.

Mayweather will make this kid cry pre fight.

Atta boy, this is a good post. Also, thanks for the welcome back. I did used to be more regular on here, but my interest in boxing has waned a bit, and I really only get motivated to have serious boxing discussion on here when I'm on my ADD meds (which work wonders by the way). Other than that, I just talk to Warp1432 outside of the site, and sometimes The_Bringer and -Hyperion-.

I don't necessarily understand why hanging out with "geeks" and being happy outside of the ring is a problem... it certainly didn't hurt Mosley's career very much, if at all.

I also am not a fan of people who knock Ortiz for his actions late in the Peterson fight. What he did is called sitting on a lead to win a decision, which is what everyone would regard it as if those idiots judges would have pulled their heads out of their asses and scored the fight correctly.

But in reality, I do kind of have a soft spot in my heart for Ortiz, as he is from my home state of Kansas, and is very proud to be from there, almost always sporting the Jayhawk (Kansas University's mascot on the extremely unlikely chance that you never watch college sports). Plus, he seems like a bright/intelligent guy with a good personality (it seems like everyone who has met him says that he is an excellent guy), both of which are kind of a rarity in the sport. I just appreciate fighters who know how to fight and how to conduct themselves in a respectable way in social situations.

I don't know how you are so confident about the outcome of this fight. It's too bad that Cotto seems to be done with the welterweight division, because I think this would be a really excellent fight to watch in terms of relevancy in the sport and in action.

Ortiz and Cotto really don't have too much in common, other than having suspect chins and both can be considered boxer/punchers, except that Ortiz punches more and Cotto boxes more.

Ortiz is explosive and has more power, better stamina and workrate.

Cotto is the better skilled boxer, more focused with a bigger heart.

To be fair, I thought he looked pretty good against Pacquiao in the first six rounds or so of their fight, when he was winning most of the rounds or only losing them because he got himself knocked down.

I also thought he looked quite good against Yuri Foreman... although that fight tells us almost nothing about how Cotto would behave in a potential fight with Ortiz.

Plus, although I didn't see his fight with Mayorga, I have heard he looked pretty good there too, except for a few rough patches. It is also important to keep in mind that Mayorga is a fighter that is difficult to look good against... only De La Hoya has done it if memory serves correctly. Mayorga has made fighters ranging from pretty good to excellent such as Vernon Forrest, Cory Spinks, Felix Trinidad, Fernando Vargas (a shot version anyway), and Shane Mosley look bad, so if Cotto looked pretty good, it's close to an excellent performance against Mayorga. Although, it is concerning that Mayorga was losing to Michael Walker before he knocked him out in the 9th round of his comeback fight after losing to Mosley and before he fought Cotto, so who really knows if Cotto's performance had more to do with Cotto or how much Mayorga had left... However, Mayorga is another fighter who does not fight in a very similar fashion to Ortiz (or anyone for that matter), so it's not a great gauge of how a Cotto-Ortiz matchup would look.
