Is Ortiz being over-rated due to his win over Berto?

I like Ortiz and if he brings the same ferocity against Floyd that he brought against Berto, then it will force Floyd to fight and give Floyd some problems.

Lets look at the facts though. Ortiz although he had problems at times, still put on a great display of heart and put it all on the line against Berto. When you look at Berto though, who has he really beaten? Many feel he lost to Collazo. Aside from that contraversial win, the biggest wins on his resume were against Quintana and Urango. Decent fighters, but not great or really good for that matter. Ortiz/Berto was still a great fight and great win for Ortiz, but the truth is, Ortiz didnt beat anyone who has proven much thus far.

Prior to his win over Berto, Ortiz took a tremendous amount of heat from the boxing world for literally quitting against the slow and not so very skilled, but hard hitting Maidana. He was basically written off and whatever fan base he had lost respect for him. The fight with Berto was a fight to redeem himself and silence those who questioned his heart, and that he did.

Now he is scheduled to fight Floyd and many are accepting this as a legitimate threat to Floyd. It is really? Now I said it once and i'll say it again, if he brings the same fight game he did for Berto, he will cause some problems for Floyd. If he's off just an inch though, Floyd will pick him apart with his stick and move style. Had this fight been mentioned prior to Ortiz beating Berto, they would have criticized Floyd into oblivion. So are you to say that 1 win over a good but unproven fighter automatically makes Ortiz a legitimate opponent for Floyd? I personally think that many fans are just desperate to see Floyd back in the ring so bad that they would have accepted and defended any opponent he chose. They would use the excuse that it's just a tune-up. Problem with that is, Floyd intentionally retires. Why should we keep excepting tune-ups from him if he purposely takes himself out of the fight game?

All in all with the current state of boxing and lack of quality matchups, I will still tune in and hope it turns out to be a good scrap worth the ppv money. Lets just hope Floyd doesnt treat this as an opportunity to (as he put it) "come back to steal some more money" then ride back off into the retirement sunset.

Yes he did, but that what happens when such a win occurs.

But, that doesn't take away that he's the best WW not named Floyd or Pacquiao. Yes the WW division is pretty damn weak. But, that doesn't also take away that Floyd-Ortiz is a legit fight.

Berto has been criticized as a champ almost from the very beginning. But that doesn't necessarily make Ortiz overrated since he has been spotted as a very talented fighter and with a good future from the beginning as well. The only rock in his path has been Maidana but he fought Maidana's fight due to inexperience. The problem is that Mayweather has yet again chosen the easiest path to follow since Ortiz is IMO still green and fresh for the picking. Mayweather needs to test himself with the likes of PAC/Martinez.

I think his natural talents are there and can give Mayweather some issues

he's big somewhat fast handed and has pop in both hands. he comes from a lefty stance which nullifies some of what Floyd does (shoulder rolling being able to rock into his right hand etc)

        it's all mental with him

Given Floyd's skill level, experience, and status within the sport, I will label Ortiz as an "acceptable" opponent. I find it hard to call it a "legit fight" though compared to the level of opposition of past greats who came from retirement to take on a challenge.

              well......

berto was rated a top 3 welterweight.

              ortiz beat him.

now ortiz is rated a top 3 welterweight.

sounds like he's rated right where he needs to be.

                It's more legit than Pac-Marg, Pac-Mosley, and Pac-JMM III @ WW.
