After the revolution Dessalines wanted the french out of haiti, after all they were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of haitians and he feared the french would re-invade. England sent what it considered its "trash" over here, mostly poor Irish and Scots, to become indentured servants, which wasn't much better than slavery and sometimes even worse, because ****** were seen as more valuable and thus were treated better in some cases than indentured servants. It was a bad situation for poor whites and blacks alike.

Jim Goad's book The Redneck Manifesto has a very good history of this brutal era.
