Can Cotto bring balance back to the Mexican vs. Rican rivalry?

I don't think so. At 160 lbs, Chavez Jr will take him out. Given that Cotto is a small JMW, I'm shocked he'd even try the Chavez fight. I'll still favor Margarito to beat him again if they rematch too despite the punishment he absorbed against Pac.Comment

You grossly underestimate JCC Jr. He is more focused now, young and regardless of what you think, is very strong physically. He is far from feather fisted and is willing to fight.Canelo is a much better boxer than Chavez Jr. The Chavez Jr fight is just Arum giving Cotto a belt in 4 weight classes. That's right, giving. Just like he gave Pacquiao that belt in "9" weight classes against Margarito. This will be another blow out, Cotto by TKO. He's gonna break the poor kid down and knock him out. Chavez Jr is weak, he's featherfisted, don't let the record fool you, he's untested.
I don't understand though, why Cotto now? Chavez Jr is really young, with no amateur background, his pro career so far is his amateur career. I see this being his first real pro fight. How are you gonna give a kid like this a guy like Cotto, when the toughest fighter he's fought before this was John Duddy?
I'm not saying he beats Cotto but I do think it's a tougher fight than you give him credit for. Plus, he will be with Roach now for 2 training camps and he's getting the best sparring and conditioning he's ever gotten.
I see Cotto winning but I don't think it will be that easy because Cotto is no longer the Cotto of old, he's just not the same fighter.
If Mayorga can go 12 with Cotto, so can Jr. Mayorga is absolute trash and is beyond shot.Comment

Now just thinking about it, JCC jr do have a chance of beating Cotto, just because JCC's trainer is Roach. He has all the right ingredients, all Chavez has to do now is deliver.I can casually play off Calderón losing to Giovanni Segura. Calderón was on his way out, and Giovanni Segura is an exciting fighter. All credit to him.
I can tolerate Juanma losing to Orlando Salido. Salido was a live dog that people were putting off as a tune-up. I never saw him as a walk in the park. Juanma's sloppy defense got the better of him, all props to Salido!
I've never seen Wilfredo Vázquez, Jr, fight and I bet on him to beat Arce. What an idiot! Good win for Arce, but from now on I'm hating on Vázquez!
Now, here's the thing: If Miguel Cotto LOSES to Julio César Chávez, Jr...I'm...I'm probably gonna' feel like Reed when he saw Jones get knocked out by Tarver.
Okay, I'm exaggerating, but I'll feel half as bad as that. I WILL feel as bad, however, if Cotto is stopped by that kid.
Ugh...that will truly be the nail in the coffin for me. If the other PR fighters lose, I can take that with a grain of salt, but Cotto...

Chavez had only 2 weeks to train with Roach for the Lyell fight, Roach had to go all the way to Culiacan, Julito got very bad quality sparring there, and had been out of the ring for 7 months.
Now he's training at the Wildcard gym with great sparring and with Ariza.
The longest camp prior to this fight with Zbik he has had with Roach, was versus Duddy at MW and he look great there.Last edited by ksan; 05-18-2011, 05:22 PM.Comment

I am going to thouroughly enjoy watching Cotto beat this kid riding off daddy's name.
If Pac didn't end Margo's career, i got Cotto avenging that loss. I like the fact that even though i think Cotto would lose against Pac again, (i don't want this fight to happen), Cotto is game for a rematch. The 'ol Cotto confidence is coming back.Last edited by jazluvr; 05-19-2011, 04:52 PM.Comment
