Whenever Pacquiao can hold down 3 different world weight class titles at the same time (And don't count jrs and supers of today's Boxing) then we can have this discussion....

"I believe he would have been competitive but let’s keep things in perspective. We are far too quick to label a fighter “great” today without sufficient evidence or analysis. I give Manny tremendous credit for what he’s done but he has succeeded far more today than would have been possible years ago. First of all, professional boxing has over 60 world champions and at least four champions for each weight division, providing many more chances to win multiple titles today. Also, a thin talent pool is stretched even thinner because of all the “alphabet groups” naming their own set of champions and contenders. Years ago Pacquiao would be defending his title against a serious contender not a near 40 year old has been who hasn’t won a fight in over two years. If the Pacquiao that we know today had been active in the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's he would have developed into a more well rounded boxer out of necessity. Fight fans who have not studied or lived through that time period just don't understand how tough the competition was during those days. Pacquiao is a very entertaining and exciting fighter. He moves around nicely and places his punches well but he is easy to hit and despite his puzzling helter skelter southpaw style he is not a great boxer. He is great for his time but not for all time. Today there is only one Manny Pacquiao. Years ago there were about 20 Manny Pacquiao’s in the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions. But those days are long gone. Most media types are clueless as to what constitutes a great boxer so they jump to the conclusion that Manny is an all time great in the class of a Henry Armstrong. That is over the top in my opinion. I will throw out two names that few remember today who would have been favored to beat Manny if we time travelled him back a few decades. A lightweight contender named Percy Bassett was a terrific fighter of the sort that Manny has never encountered. He was a shifty seasoned boxer with a great jab and footwork who would have Manny missing all over the place while piling up the points. Another boxer who would be too slippery for Manny is welterweight contender Bernard Docusen, who gave a prime Sugar Ray Robinson all he could handle. But I can understand why Manny appears to be great to so many people. It is because he reminds us of the great fighters of the past in that he is closer to a throwback fighter than any other active boxer today ."

This is a quote from Mike Silver, one of the U.S. accepted "boxing historian/expert."

      Joe Louis born 1914 - 37
      Rocky Marciano born 1923 - 28

They both met in 1951 with Joe Louis aged 37 and Rocky Marciano aged 28. So, how is this fight different from Manny Pacquiao aged 32 facing Sugar Shane Mosley aged 39?

A lot of people will say that Joe Louis was coming from many wins but how many of us can guarantee that those fights weren't fix? Remember the Mafia used to control boxing during those days.

      Another one:

      Archie Moore born 1916
      Muhammad Ali born 1942

They both met in 1962 with Moore aged 46 and Ali aged 20. So, how can you even defend this one?

      Trevor Berbick born 1954
      Muhammad Ali born 1942

They both met in 1981 with Berbick aged 27 and Ali aged 39. Another one back in the old days of boxing.

      Another one:

Sugar Ray Leonard only fought 6 Hall of Famers

      Marvin Hagler
      Thomas Hearns
      Wifred Benitez
      Roberto Duran
      Hector Camacho
      Terry Norris

Manny Pacquiao fought these many future Hall of Famers:

      Marco Antonio Barrera
      Erik Morales
      Juan Manuel Marquez
      Oscar De La Hoya
      Sugar Shane Mosley
Miguel Antonio Cotto (one of the few Puerto Rican boxers to become champion in 3 weight classes)

So why can't Manny Pacquiao and Sugar Ray Leonard share the same podium?

You know what? I ain't never listening to these so called boxing scribes like Mike Silver and Teddy Atlas. These two are clowns. Boxing has a lot of greats who fought old and worn-out greats from the beginning of boxing history to modern history of boxing.

I discovered that Teddy Atlas is an unstable person. Here is a quote from Wikipedia and Atlas' book support it too:

      "Teddy Atlas' book revelation

In 2006, Atlas published his autobiography, Atlas: From the Streets to the Ring: A Son's Struggle to Become a Man. In the book, he revealed that he came close to murdering Lalonde. "When he made six million for Leonard, it tore me up," Atlas wrote. "It made me murderous." If Lalonde had not fired Atlas and he had been with Lalonde for the Leonard fight, Atlas would've gotten 10% of Lalonde's purse, $600,000.

Atlas described getting a gun and going to Lalonde's apartment building in New York. After getting buzzed into the building by another tenant, Atlas went to Lalonde's apartment and knocked on the door. "If he had opened the door, he was dead," Atlas wrote. "I would have pulled the trigger, turned around, and walked away." However, there was no answer.

Atlas waited through the night for Lalonde to return, periodically phoning the apartment. When he finally got through, Lalonde's girlfriend answered. When asked if Lalonde was home, she said yes. Atlas hung up and started making his way over to the apartment. Somewhere along the way, for whatever reason, Atlas changed his mind.

Lalonde knew nothing about it until the book came out, and a friend told him about it. "It actually didn't surprise me when I heard it," he said. "Teddy got into fights with trainers and fighters quite a bit when I was with him. he may not be the most stable person walking around."[6]

Just saying: Give Pacquiao his credit and his fans. Saying Pacquiao is an All Time Great is not a silly statement to say. If a fan says Pacquiao is at the top 10 great fighters then it is a legitimate statement too. Fighters success are judge subjectively so why are boxing fans getting butthurt when someone says Pacquiao is an All Time Great or a top 3, 5, 10 fighter of boxing? If an Asian boxing historian writes a book about Asian boxers then Pacquiao's position will still be subjective based on the writer.

      It is like this:

Bill Russell greatest player of the 1950s to 1960s led the Boston Celtics to 17 NBA championships. If you are a basketball fan, you should know this guy.

Larry Bird led the Boston Celtics to win 3 NBA championships in the 1980s.

Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to 6 NBA championships in the 1990s.

Kobe Bryant led the Los Angeles Lakers to 5 NBA championships in 2000 - 2010.

Ain't nothing wrong saying Kobe Bryant is an All Time Great basketball player or even one of the Top Ten. It is all subjective.

TL;DR Nothing wrong in saying Pacquiao is an All Time Great, GOAT, or whatever. In every generation their will always be someone who rises up to the occasion and becomes a legend.

Looking back at those fighters it is amazing how many of them have the same style as well.

If you really think nutritional knowledge hasn't been incredibly advanced from now compared to 60 or 70 years ago then you just need to educate yourself on the topic. But an example would be the repulsive way old school fighters would make weight by essentially starving themselves or working them until exhaustion.

And now that you bring up the example of Pacquiao lets discuss it... when was Pacquiao's worst point in his career? The beginning when he was KO'd several times and trained in a 3rd world country with limited resources.

Now when did his career explode into making him a superstar. Well that would be when he trained with Freddie Roach to bring more advanced knowledge to him. Also with Alex Ariza an excellent nutritionist who effectively moved him up in weight while he still fought at level to keep his speed.
this is a problem. the reasaon freddie's a great trainer is because of who taught himm to train., thre are very few old school trainers left nowadays. dudes like bhop are still great because they have the basics and have perfected the knowledge taught from trainers with a long lineage of training. new trainers can't hold their jocks unless they were schooled from the old school guys.

to counter all this nutritional advancement and advancement in exercise, there is the toughness and activity and STAMINA that the old school fighters needed. they were ready to fight 50 rounds, dudes train for 12 rounds now.

It was actually a good read , but I think he neglects the biggest issue that will always undermine Manny , he did not win his biggest wins fairly they were made to order ,,, the people that rate Pac so highly are only rating the on paper accomplishments , they are not looking at the fights and paper titles involved .
