I don't see how some flabby football player who isn't a very good boxer is going to bring in casual fans.

If you think Zbikowski is flabby you are either blind, or ******ed.

      Maybe both.

Zbikowski gets on TV, but none of the networks would show a Adamek vs. Cunningham II fight, between the two best in the division at the time.
Bad comparisons. Outside of hardcore boxing fans no one even knows the name Rakhim Chakhkiev. I've seen him once but I wouldn't be able to pick him out of a police lineup. He isn't going to sell more than a dozen tickets, or add 1000 viewers to a TV broadcast. Zbikowski sells tickets and adds viewers based on him being an NFL player.

As far as Adamek vs Cunningham II, would they have both fought for a combined purse of $50k, and an undercard bout to a small regional sports network card or opening a little watched PPV?

lol you're asking why a former NFL player is getting so much attention in boxing? Seriously?

Being a former NFL player doesn't make one a good boxer!

They were worth a lot more than that - they should have at least been a co-main event. Their first fight was one of the best of 2008.

No reason if they can give $50,000 to Zbikowski they couldn't come up with $200,000 for Adamek and the same for Cunningham.

What would win NEW BOXING FANS is more fights like Cunningham-Adamek I, NOT someone with poor boxing skills like Zbikowski KOing a fat bum.

Whether he's a good boxer or not is irrelevant. Do you think Britney Spears is a good singer? Do you think Tiesto is a good DJ?

Neither Britney, Tiesto, or Zbikowski are in the top 50 of their profession talent wise. But what they have in common is that they are marketable and in business, thats what is most important.

No one is saying it does, that's not the point. They are telling you why he's on TV

That seems like a good Showtime fight but for whatever reason it didn't happen. Why? I don't know.

If it's not clear yet it should be that promoters, networks, and managers couldn't care less about new boxing fans. They just want the immediate dollars that come with premium cable, PPV, and (sometimes) tickets. If any of these people cared about gaining long term fans there would be a much different model in place.

They believe that Zbikowski makes them immediate money.

I was at a fight of his a month ago, and I can say that he is a really talented boxer. His problem is with his conditioning. The first two rounds of his fight were masterful, old school boxing and countering. In the third and fourth rounds, he just fell apart and was a sitting target.

I like Tommy Z and think he has potential to be a crossover star in the sport if the NFL misses the season, but he is still learning how to be an effective pro boxer.

Boxing is just a vanity project for him to have some fun and do what he loves when he's not on the football field. Naturally, fans of the guy are going to check him out in his new venture, even if boxing fans wouldn't give him the time of day.

At the end of the day, a few more heads will be watching boxing here and there. That's all this is, and there's nothing wrong with that.
