anyone who says otherwise doesnt know an uppercut from a jab.

How about.....most people haven't seen enough lengthy footage to make a real assessment of Pep's skills ?

      then try reading.

most folk havent seen enough footage of jack johnson (the best defensive heavyweight ever) neither but most have him in their top ten all time on rep.

Reading definitely helps.....but when you have Whitaker on your television, showing his stuff, & Pep's best IN PRINT...you'll be inclined to go with Whitaker.

WELL YOU DO IF YOU ARE ONLY JUDGING BOXING FORM THE ADVENT OF THE TEELEVISON MATE.

which discounts most fighter pre 1950, that 50 year sof history dying cos people cant be arsed.

I for one will do my bit to ensure that doesn't happen.

seeing as the golden era of boxing was the 20/30's it would be a crying shame.

It's Willie Pep hands down. None in the poll comes close to his record of 230 wins and since most of his bouts went the distance Pep has fought more rounds than any fighter in history, probably about as many as all the other fighters in the poll combined. You can't fight at that level without a great defense. Was 63-0 before his first loss to a HOF lightweight champ Angott, and then tacked on 72 consecutive victories before being derailed by another HOF great, Sandy Saddler. That loss came AFTER Pep was permanently paralyzed in a plane crash and made a miraculous recovery. He then tacked on almost 100 wins to finish his career in his mid 40s.

                You're missing my point.
You basically insulted people for picking Whitaker over Pep....& I gave you the best reason (& it's a decent one) for why they do so.

I don't think guys in the 20s and 30s can be compared to guys in modern times 1990's and up. The difference in competition/skills is just so much...

i hardly think saying you dont know an uppercut form a jab is that insulting.

it means you dont know much about about boxing,. which if you dont knwo who willie pep is, is an accurate comment.

I'm sure everyone KNOWS who Willie Pep is (I certainly do)....but the fact that they haven't seen nearly as much as him as they did Pea....is what brought them to pick Pea.
                      that's all.
