it had almost nothing to do with the 4lbs he didnt have to push him back physically. it was the power of his punches and strength of ortiz in the clinches that had berto going backwards. he knew he wasnt going to be able to maul him liek he did with quintana or urango.

Victor is stronger at 147. We already knew he was a heavy puncher, but he's an even bigger puncher at 147.

Berto is actually lucky because he was holding virtually from round 7 on. The ref should have taken points for all that, not for the accidental hit to the back of the head. But Berto knew if he didn't hold everytime Victor came at him, he was going to get KTFO.
You don't "box" southpaws. You press the attack, initiate contact and counter when they throw punches when you can. Non of us have been hit by either Berto or Ortiz so we can only speculate on how much one hits harder than the other. Berto would have been the one being held had he pressed the attack. Berto was never going to gain confidence as long as he was backing up and he wouldn't have to worry about holding Ortiz as much had he been the one coming forward.

I doubt Ortiz would go back to 140 given he feels more powerful at 147. Maidana would have to come up. Especially considering Ortiz is 100% the bigger draw now given Maidana's result in the Morales fight.

I think Ortiz would win at 147. In fact, I think he would KO Maidana. Morales exposed a lot of Maidana and how to survive (with one eye no less) and even get the best of Maidana without getting knocked out.

To me Maidana is one of the most over rated fighters. If you box him, you will win. And he can't even really do what Victor just did, he can't *make* the fight a brawl.

I'm starting to wonder how many of you have actually been inside a boxing ring or at least had a few street fights. Everything is going into speculation and away from the science of fighting. I'm now done sharing my boxing experience. You can take it or leave it.

Interesting, considering the only rounds Berto won was when he started boxing in the middle of the ring. You can stop a pressing attack by boxing. Both knock downs he scored were the result of his speed or boxing. It didn't happen from pressing Ortiz.

In fact, pressing Ortiz got him knocked down at the end of round 6. Which is exactly why it would have been wrong to press Ortiz. It really does not matter that he is a Southpaw. No fighter is the same and no fight is the same.

In this fight, it would have been a huge mistake at any point after the first round to go after Ortiz. The one time he did it cost him turning the fight. In round 6, he shifted the momentum back his way, but he lost it by pressing the attack. Ortiz can counter punch, so why would you want to press when you still have no legs?

Anyone who has been around not only boxing but a long time fan of fights would realize you can't make blanket statements like.

Berto let Ortiz dictate the fight. Just on the 1st round, Ortiz was brawling/pressuring him and Berto followed suit. The 2nd knock down of Berto really affected him during the fight. Ortiz was doing good at inside fighting which Berto is not. Berto needs to fight at a distance to set up his punches.
