Surely it has nothing to do with over 3 decades of refereeing, including 100+ world title fights.

As many bad performances as Cortez has had in his career this really isn't one of them.

If the shoe was on the other foot and it was Ishida down 3 times in the first round and Cortez had stopped it in exactly the same way no one would be complaining whatsoever. The fact is Kirkland was wobbling all over the place getting tagged not throwing back.

early stoppage yeah it probably was but hardly an outrageous bad stoppage Kirkland was out of it.

I don't think the 3 KD rule had anything to do with it. Cortez prob thought after the 2nd one, "If he goes down again Im waving it off". I think he was right too, Kirkland was getting hurt by nearly every shot. He was done.

no matter how crappy kirkland looked, he deserved a 10 count and an opportunity to try and get on his feet.

cortez thought this was WWE or something and he gave kirkland a 3 count. wtf.

First thing I noticed! What the **** was with pinning him down with his knee?? Kirkland wasn't as hurt as I expected him to be (caught the replay) as it wasn't like his eyes were all over the place or anything. I think he should have given him the oppotunity to beat hte count.

James Kirkland got owned either way as it was bad enough he was dropped to begin with!

You silly woman - this sport is not for little girly men like you. Stick to indoor volleyball or table tennis, you damn *****.
I do think the fight was stopped premature, because as i say if you look at the olden day fights, it is a different sport now.

My only problem with last night is that its worlds away from the olden days of boxing, where the boxer was seriously hurt and the other boxer could stand over the stricken boxer waiting for them to get up so they can attack again. If i could rewind time, i would protect those boxers like they are protected now.

These posts are funny with Ishida being lucky and Kirkland wasn't hurt and Kirkland was going to win or the fight was fixed or Kirkland slipped. GTFOH.

Give props where it's due. Kirkland just got manhandled by a Japanese Maglinaggi.

If a boxer gets knocked down 3 times in the first round its probably best to stop the fight. Boxers are often kept on the canvas after a fight is stopped for medical reasons although Kirkland didn't look too out of it. What if Cortez let the fight continue and then Kirkland got seriously hurt you would probably say the fight should have been stopped earlier right?
