it was the third knockdown of the fight, fight was over...........
but other than that, yes, cortez needs to go, i've been saying it for years, he's no good, past his prime and a competency level suited for being a world class referee.......
cortez's "i'm fair but firm" is bullcrap, it has taken him out of being a professional and more into trying to be a celebrity. now if and when he makes a bad call, he's forced, because of his trying get fame schtick being fair, he now has to make another bad call to justify or right his previous wrong, if you watch his body of work, you'll see it happen a multitude of times in his fights.
im not really doing my argument any justice right now, but just look at his fights, one bad call after another, the guy is a hack, and ruining fighters careers............
my last straw with this guy was the soto-lorenzo fight.............
now i rip on everything he does, his right calls have been about 1% to his wrong calls in the last 10 years......

It was definitely a premature stoppage I think. Kirkland definitely looked like he would have been able to get up if Cortez didn't pin his ass down. Although I don't think he would have survived the round given how Ishida pounced on him after the 2nd KD. With that said, Cortez had no business doing what he did. He should have given him the count and if he couldn't respond AFTER he got up then call it off, don't pin the guy down when he's trying to get up.Comment

LOOOOOOOOOOOL, just rewatching now.
Cortez forcibly pinning Sparkedland to the canvas ("stay right there"), then dragging him up and escorting him to his corner via bearhug ("stay right there") and then Sparkedland's "WTF" expression are priceless.

Kirkland was done. Fair stoppage nothing to complain about. Cortez done his job and saved him from further punishment. Kirkland just wasn't in Ishida's league.Comment
