I think he was exposed and I also expected many things from him. Ishida wasn't know for heavy punches, but yet he KDed 3 times "toughest" guy at MW. It's like Malignaggi KOing Shane Mosley.

I'd say he got exposed. It was the equivalent of getting KTFO by Malignaggi.
Have you ever been 2 years away from something and came back? And came back immediately the same? I don't think so. He wasnt used to real fight speed. He trashed 2 bums who had no chance then took 3weeks notice against a live fighter.

He took Brian Vera(who's another puncher) and Julio's best shots and trashed them, then takes 2 years away from the game then gets dropped like that. That alone should tell you something.

He needs Anne Wolfe back. He simply does not fight with the same fire without her.
Exactly, that and what I replied back to the other guy. He needs Anne Wolfe back and get back to sparring ASAP. Thats the first 2 things he needs to do.

Not saying he'll ever be a P4P king but hes a damn good fighter and has shown it in the past. Once he gets back to the speed of things he'll be back to being a motha****in problem.

I ain't making no excuses either, I said Ishida will give him a tough test and cause some problems just because he was never stopped. Except I didn't expect it that soon. His chin didn't fail him his defense did. he would have gotten back up. Brawlers always put themselves at risk to put be floored by being caught off balance. Ishida was too clean and too crisp for him tonight.

And I'll leave the rest for Natas. If your an NFL fan and think Plaxico Burress will be a monster as soon as he steps onto that field from jail after being away a year your sadly mistaken. Same thing...
My reply in that same thread:

Yep. But we can't take anything away from Ishida. He did what he was supposed to and came in prepared physically and mentally. I think Kirkland wasn't prepared mentally, with the "anything can happen in the ring" mentality.

This was his third fight within 5 weeks and like everyone else, he probably expected all these fights to be easy with him being fed cannon fodder. It's understandable for him to lose his edge w/ that in mind, but that's still no excuse.

It's also hard to blame GBP in this situation given Ishida's record. Perhaps someone from GBP should have told James about Ishida's speed, because he didn't look like he was expecting it.

No matter what, now Kirkland is forced to work on his head movement and defense.

This loss can be a blessing in disguise depending on how kirkland grows from it.

im not speaking ill of kirkland but the fact of the matter is, his chin has always been suspect, this just solidifies that. i know he fought tough guys and been in against bigger punchers and didn't get knocked out, but he's been dropped before and shaken before by guys that weren't world beaters. if he were to fight a world beater he would get stopped again.

like i've said before, if he gets stunned or hurt against a finisher, not only someone who can punch, but someone who can put punches together to stop a fight, kirkland is going out....... and we saw that with a guy that is a light puncher tonight.

im not saying he can't come back and do good, i'm just saying his chin wont hold up against a fighter like angulo or martinez, or maybe even cintron..... i like kirkland, but i've seen too many poor responses to punches from him that tells me he's not able to handle the real heat.

i wish the best for him, and i do applaud him for trying to put as many fights together as possible to get back into the main frame of the division, and this is a bad set back, i hope he's able to change his game up and prove me wrong, i just don't see it. ...... ...... ........

This wasn't the first time hes been rocked. He's been in the gym working and sparring since October-November and he's already had two fights. I don't care if he had a decade-long layoff, he got laid out by a Japanese Malignaggi tonight.

You didn't see Morales hitting the canvas after his three year layoff. Guys have layoffs, comebacks, ect. after long periods on inactivity, and it doesn't magically turn their chins into jelly.

Sorry. I was interested in his career too. But a feather fist just knocked him the **** out tonight. Make whatever excuse you want, but that doesn't happen to really good, let alone great fighters.

Personally I dont think Kirkland was exposed, I think he just underestimated his opponent by the way he just kept coming and showed no respect..

he got rocked his last fight because he has NO DEFENSE and NO HEAD MOVEMENT!

I remember before he got locked up, Ann Wolfe use to always tell him to "MOVE YOUR HEAD JAMES" ALL THE TIME so his poor defense and lack of head movement is NOTHING NEW!

This lost is exactly what he needed, so he can learn that it is going to take more then just POWER PUNCHES and quick KO's to become a Champion

Kirkland looked like a guy who had 0 sparring and didn't warm up.

If you are sparring well and you are taking punches well in training this shouldn't happen.

Kirkland needs to get back to the gym as soon as possible.

To be fair, I don't think it was necessarily's Ishida's power that took Kirkland out. I think it was more of the Japanese fighter's speed and accuracy.

Kirkland helped a lot with the first KD. Ishida threw the left on the button and Kirkland added more damage by basically running into it when he lunged up to throw his left.

The next 2 KD's were from straight rights and Ishida threw them fast and on the button as well. Everything was probably happening too fast for James to notice what was going on. Combination of his underestimating the opponent, not expecting the first round to be like this, and Ishida's speed and accuracy.

But regardless, Kirkland fought the way he always did and that's what cost him. No respect or realization for what the opponent brings, little defense, and little head movement.

I disagree with posters saying that he should go back to his previous trainer. Unless she's going to teach him defense and how to pace himself, then what happened tonight will occur more frequently.
