Comments Thread For: Schaefer: Alvarez vs Rhodes Could Be Finalized This Week

Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, has advised BoxingScene.com that a deal could be finalized as early as this week for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's first defense of the WBC junior middleweight title against mandatory challenger Ryan Rhodes (45-4, 31KOs). Alvarez (36-0, 26KOs) will defend against Rhodes on June 18 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Discussions are still ongoing to determine whether or not the fight is going to land on regular HBO. There is a possibility that Alvarez-Rhodes will headline an HBO pay-per-view event.

Great news! Rhodes more than deserves this shot and could win this as well!! Looking forward to this fight; fair play to Golden Boy for manning up and making this fight happen.

If you winning a world title it's sink or swim time. I think it's a very good fight and very winnable, hope it happens.

Either TKO by Ryan Rhodes or UD by Alvarez

Rhodes needs a KO for a convincing win. A decision from the judges may not be that easy as this is in Mexico. The problem that I see from Rhodes is that he only fought for a TOTAL of 22 rds in last two years. That may be a good thing or a bad thing depending how you look at it. Power is there but stamina might not be his game.

Alvarez has been "rushed" to become WBC world champion, jumping ahead of Rhodes, who was passed by despite having won an eliminator. Now Rhodes is forced by WBC to face Alvarez on the conditions that Golden Boy Promotions dictate. And you think that Alvarez is being rushed????

There was a time when a world champion was supposed to "take on all comers". I know that in the real world it was never quite like that, but if it is "too early" for Alvarez to take on his challengers, he should not wear the belt.
