I was re-watching some Gamboa/Lopez fights last night. Memory can play tricks on you, so I was doing some A-B comparisons. I was surprised at some of the things I saw; sometimes they went against what I thought I "knew" about these fighters.
JuanMa is slower than I recalled. He's a good technician, but he gets hit often and has been rocked a few times. He moves around the ring very well. Lopez is tougher, gutsier and more resourceful than his detractors would have you think. He's been knocked for having trouble with Rogers Mtagwa, but there are two ways you can look at it. Yes, Lopez was taken to the brink by a journeyman, but it was amazing to watch him finish while literally out on his feet. He showed great will. I was very impressed by this. In a war, there's no questioning his heart and presence of mind...I don't care what anybody says.
Yuriorkis has better defense than many believe. Some people haven't updated their data on the current state of Gamboa's "D". Here's an interesting observation: I, too, notice that Yuri leaves his head wide open when delivering a flurry of punches. However, at such times, Yuri is throwing blazing 4-5 punch combinations with power. It's extremely difficult to take advantage of the "opening" when you're trying not to leave your own head open to a known KO artist. You might say that some of Gamboa's defense lies in his offense.
JuanMa is, obviously, a very dangerous opponent. Only the haters will state otherwise. This is still a difficult result to predict. But, after making some reassessments, I'm feeling just a bit more confident in Gamboa's chances.
