I'm posting my thoughts here too much garbage in other threads.
Anyway, I saw the fight with Cotto vs Mayorga. I'm thinking Arum is preparing his guys who are now legitimate Super Welterweight or Junior Middleweight boxers against Sergio Martinez. Cotto's opposition has been getting bigger, faster, and stronger in his competition. Bigger (Margarito & Mayorga), faster (Pacquiao), and stronger (Mosley & Mayorga). Regardless of Mosley (39) and Mayorga's (38) age they are only removed from Martinez (36) by 3 or 2 years meaning their age difference is not really that different.
I'm thinking next year we will get to see a Sergio Martinez vs either Cotto or Margarito. I also see Mayorga fighting 2 more fights against someone notable in Top Rank stable or the loser of Cotto vs Margarito match-up.
I would like to see Cotto vs Martinez. And I would like to see Margarito vs Mayorga because Mags will cater to Mayo's war (brawl) it will be explosive. I laughed and enjoyed the Cotto vs Mayorga fight. It was entertaining.
I hope you are right, however, I don't think Cotto will fight Martinez anytime soon. Martinez weighed 170 lbs by the time he entered the ring last night and he looked huge and better than ever. Against a smaller and shorter guy like Cotto, Martinez should be able to jab him to death, move without getting hit and probably stop him. I think that would be a bad move by Top Rank if they want to keep Cotto revelant. You put the names of Mayorga, Margarito, Cotto, Wolak, Canelo and possibly even Rhodes in a hat and match any two against each other and you will have an entertaining fight. With that said, Martinez is just too big and too good for any of them and will probably target his stolen belt which will be contested by Chavez Jr vs. Zbik...
I don't think he should retire just yet. Yeah, he's 38 and lost, but he actually looked good. Plus, he fought Miguel Cotto.. Wasn't like he fought a tomato can and got ****d. He came in to this fight in great shape, and put on a good performance. He did not look shot to me. I think Mayorga should take one more fight, so he can go out on a win!
I saw the fight. Bought the PPV and don't care what people say that it wasn't worth it. MAYORGA was ****ing awesome in this fight regardless of that 12th round. He took Cotto all the way to 12 rounds after a surgery and 2 years in the bench. Seriously, Mayorga made the fight memorable. Hands down, I was laughing and yelling during the fight that I didn't even notice that 12 rounds passed by so quickly. I saw Mayorga gas out at 11th and 12th round but who doesn't. **** this fight was ****ing entertaining.
I totally agree! If this was a younger Mayorga, Cotto would have gone down in round 6 or 7. Mayorga may have wild swings but he has very very good timing and heavy hands. I think he's really more of a counter puncher in true nature masquerading as a slugger. He has the timing of a counter puncher.
I really hate Cotto's rhythmic punching! Like 1,2,3 and stop... 1,2,3 and stop... 1,2,3 and stop... If he faces Martinez like that he's going to get cold with counter shots. He's stationary when throwing combinations and doesn't even move forward when he should. It was really ineffective and it almost looked like he was resigned to pot-shot Mayorga till the end of the fight.
Cotto's timing is really not for pound-for-pound king material.
