  • martinez wants MONEY fights.... and who can blame him at 36.....

h/e.... fighting guys who are so much smaller just isn't an option..... the truth is fighting mayweather, would be less money and more risk for mayweather than fighting pacquiao.... so what could he gain? it's nonsensical for both manny and floyd.....

martinez needs to beat the top 160pounders... sturm is still around and there are plenty of up and comers.... martinez's style will sell tickets and boxoffice numbers so he need not rely on fighting the smaller superstars like b-hop did.....

He has to beat those 2 because clowns like you will never allow him to be #1 without beating them. That means he has no chance to become #1 and thats his dream. He's 36 years old and guys like you will never call him #1 as long as Pacquiao's still around. So how else does he become #1 before he retires?

      • Sometimes I forget why I like boxing. The HBO card last night reminded me why I do. That was a good show. Both fights were very exciting and, despite the early knockdowns, I thought Dzinziruk was coming on and might actually pull the upset. He fought really well, but Martinez was just exceptional.

Andy Lee is tough to read. Sometimes he looks like he could punch a hole through a brick wall, and sometimes he just looks like a dorky, awkward white guy who has no business in there. He looked like both Saturday.

But it was an excellent card. I really liked it. I think Roy Jones is a great addition to the team. And I thought Max Kellerman was more understated than usual and it made his points more relevent.

Jim Lampley needs to go. All he does is cheerlead. I don't think he even pays attention most of the time. Kellerman had to break in to Lampley's constant 'fawning' over Martinez during the middle rounds to point out that Dzinziruk was actually landing good shots and they were bothering Martinez.

In the Jones-Kellerman-Lampley lineup, Lampley is by far the weak link at this point. Harold Lederman needs to go as well. He serves no point at all.

Martinez has already moved up about as far as he should go. You don't need to move up to become a big star. There's something to be said for dominating and cleaning out a weight class.

Martinez-Sturm would be great. Martinez-Chavez would be great. Martinez-Kirkland would be very good. Arthur Abraham has talked about moving back to middleweight. Martinez-Abraham would be good.

He's got several years worth of attractive matchups at middleweight if he chooses to stay put.

Wrong... you're just making lame excuses for Pacman. As has been shown here over and over, Pac has been a natural WW (144) since Morales.

            • It was interesting the way martinez fought with his arms down as they mentioned in the commentaries. He took some good shots before he finished off dzinziruk. Iwas surprised that andy lee was able to k.o. mcewan since he was behind on the scorecards.

Who're the "we all?" Just speak for yourself, 'cos yesir's reasoning to not give credit to B.S. fights is correct in my book.

P4P isn't a weight class - you don't get to be #1 by beating smaller fighters who happen to be ranked higher P4P - you get to #1 by beating fighters your own size or bigger and by looking great doing it.

As long as he keeps fighting high calibre fighters in his own weight class or higher, and Pac keeps cherry picking, and Floyd stays on vacation, Martinez will get to #1 in all credible P4P rankings (such as The Ring's) very soon. The Ring has had several articles recently expressing disappointment that Pac is no longer fighting the best available competition. Martinez's win over Dzinziruk, who is not remotely a big name, but who was perceived as one of his toughest available opponents (tougher at Middleweight than Pac would be), has greatly elevated the perception of Martinez's P4P status. That proves conclusively that he does not need to fight big names who are much smaller than he is in order to rise up the rankings, he needs to fight the best available competition in his weight class or higher, and to look good doing it. And he should start with Sturm. If he destroys Sturm this year like he destroyed Dzinziruk, and if Pac keeps cherry picking and Floyd stays on vacation, then Martinez will certainly be ranked #1 before the end of the year.

OTOH if the lineal World Middleweight champion beats an undersized Welterweight, that would have absolutely no effect on any sensible P4P rankings, because they are pound for pound rankings.

If weighing 144 on fight night makes him a natural Welterweight, then Cotto was a natural Middleweight when they fought each other, and Clottey and Marg were natural Super Middleweights. You can't pretend that this is still the era of weigh-ins just before the fight when it comes to Pac, but not when it comes to his opponents - that's ridiculous cherry picking. Pac's fight night weight has been 15-20lb lower than that of his opponents in every fight since he moved to Welterweight. Even Hatton outweighed him by nearly 10lb on fight night.

Unfortunately, the major thrust of your argument falls flat on its face if they agree to fight at 150 (as Martinez has categorically stated he would) or even less.
