Why Are Older Boxers Over-Rated?

Why is it if you make a thread along the lines off : Retired Boxer -V- Active Boxer, The vast majority will always pick the retired boxer to beat the active boxer?

For instance in Ali days, People said Marciano -V- Ali, Marciano would win they even made a computer simulation. If you make a thread about any retired boxer -V- an active boxer the majority will always pick the retired boxer no matter what.

I think its a false notion that retired boxers were somehow better than current active boxers because they went 15 rounds instead of 12 baring in mind they did not have the kind of strength and conditioning then that they did now.

Active fighters are even more overrated - for instance, Pacquiao's record is rife with shot Mexicans, steroid abusers, cheaters, payed off Africans, fighters on the slide and an accumulation of paper titles along the way to his fictitious '8 division titles', but you often read his name being thrown around with the likes of Armstrong or Hagler.

Disgraceful, is the word to describe it.

They aren't overrated.

It's just their careers are long over, so it's easier to make an assessment of how great they are.

For example, people didn't realize or care enough to realize how good of a champ Lennox Lewis was till after he retired.

I understand nutrition, strength and conditioning has come a long way, but how relevant is that considering fighters gas out and get injured just as much these days if not more than the old timers did.

Plus, in an age of pre-madonnas and fighters taking small risks for big rewards, it's easier to write off current fighters compared to older fighters who were from an era when everyone fought each other and wanted to prove they were the best, not just make the most money possible.

Fighters always sound better when hearing about them from your dad or a dude at your barbershop then they do when you actually watch them fight.

This is hardly limited to just boxing.In any sport(or even in any form of entertainment) you'll find that fans who grew up in a certain era are usually biased towards that era.It's completely natural.


And in fairness,the level of talent has dramatically decreased in the sport over the last five years or so.Apart from a select few,the only truly exceptional fighters around today are the one's who made their professional debut's a decade or over ago.


The vast majority of prospects today - especially the American one's - are decent athlete's but are technically unrefined and lack real boxing skills.

Also with weight classes its a lot easier for people to ignore the fact that with a few exceptions guys today are much bigger stronger and faster. For baseball its obvious when you see A-Rod, Ryan Howard or Felix Hernandez and then look at Tom Seaver or Joe Torre that the guys now are vastly superior athletes with a few exceptions.

You'd be hard pressed to make an ATG list and not leave the 2000's, and for good reason. Our boxers suck both in and out of the ring.

LOL if you are leaving off Roy Jones Jr, Bernard Hopkins Manny Pacquiao etc on any kind of list talking about the greatest fighters of all time you don't know a danm thing about boxing.
