Basilio was a monster. Imagine him with todays crop at 147 and 154. He would be brutal.
Would Jack Dempsey beat Wladimir Klitschko?

Locche did not train almost at all, and used to be a chain smoker...even smoking inbetween rounds in some of his fights.

On top of that, these guys were hungry. If they didn't fight, sometimes their family didn't eat.Comment

he had speed of mind, not speed of body. it doesnt take that many fast twitch muscles at all to pivot your upper body, its such a short distance.

black irish's point is dead on.
The film doesn't do a lot of these old guys justice. Besides that power and strength is more of a product of sound biomechanics than a gaudy looking body. Most boxers have lean bodies and while they're usually ripped, their not overly muscled yet they can still crack ribs and break forearms no matter what weight they're at.
What a war between Carmen and Ray!!. Can you imagine the fighters of today like Berto or Dirrell who are always looking to complain to the ref if they were thrust in that era?
They'd be lunch.Comment

I guess you would also call fat HW version of James Toney athletic as well, but whatever.

Jack Dempsey... greatest boxer of all-time and old school tough man... chewed tree sap, washed his face with vinegar, and soaked his fists in horse urine, all for the fight.
That's dedication right there..

The old timers were tough as nails though.
Saying this, Wlad is a helluva lot bigger than Dempsey and extremely skilled.
He would most likely be to much for ol' Jack.Comment
