He was underrated and definitely in the top 5, perhaps top 3, in 2007-2008.

But now he's 3 years older, age 39. He's gone through long periods of inactivity and hasn't fought a top 100 heavyweight except for Chazz Witherspoon since Wladimir knocked him out.

Tony didn't look good, not even like a top 25 heavyweight in his last fight against a feather-fisted 43 year old who came out of retirement to fight him.

Thompson needs to get in the ring with another ranked contender before it's too late. He's running out of time.

      Chambers
Adamek I think would have no problem beating him.
Povetkin, if he is in shape.
      Arreola would probably beat him.
Sam Peter would have a good shot.

Really, he might be in the top 5 but not after his next fight, which I believe he will end up losing if he fights anyone at the top. I mean we all saw him out cold against Wlad.

He hasn't fought anyone good in almost 2 years. He's fighting bums right now.

There's no way he's third in the division, no way at all.
Adamek would definitely lose against Thompson, he struggled against past prime Grant and Thompson is much more consistant or a puncher than Grant.
Peter would give up after about 3 or 4 rounds and Thompson would dominate Arreola got tagged constantly an got beat up agaisnt Quezada, who is not a big puncher. Thompson would hit him at will and his defense is too solid to get overwhelmed offensively. Arreola would gas and Thompson would beat him up from then on.
Povetkin will never come in in shape.

Chambers has a good shot to beat Thompson if he comes in shape. bad style matchup.

          Based purely on his record.

          He should be considered #3.

Not a fan. Though I respect his work.

Wlad's victims tend to be underrated, but Tony did better against him than anyone else in almost seven years (yes even the two that went the distance.) Wouldn't call him top 3 though.

I don't think so. Sam Peter has very limited boxing skills. And Ademak had big problems with a shot Michael Grant. "Beating Thompson with no problems" is an unrealistic statement.

Thompson put up a typical American HW performance against a Klitschko... he talked a lot of hot air and froze when the inevitable jab fest onslaught began. He should be ashamed of such a poor performance. I can't believe I even made the effort to watch it.

So if he's no.3 then I'm a monkey's uncle. Maybe he's no.3 in America but not in Europe or the world.

Adamek had big problems with Michael Grant is pretty unrealistic. He damn near one every single round.
