Dejan Zavec explains why he's facing Paul Delgado (ranked #15), future fights

(He just posted this interview on his facebook in Slovene. Here are some excerpts I've translated)

"In sports as well as life, sometimes you have to take a step back before you can take two steps forward."

"Throughout your career, facing a slightly lower ranked competitor is normal. It's important to be ready for every match, because one loss can completely change your plans and aspirations. I will never underestimate anyone. I have prepared for Delgado as with any opponent and I will be in top shape. In his case, he will be looking for the knockout. He has nothing to lose and this is all or nothing for him: a breakthrough or the end of his career"

Ï have experience as a fighter, but there will definitely be something to gain from a fight with Delgado. Remember that Delgado is an American and boxes as such, which I have never faced before. It would not be the first time the underdog gave the favorite some problems"

He also states on the event announcement of the fight that a duel with either Shane Mosley or Floyd Mayweather is "of the utmost importance to me. This is the only way to become known in the United States"

I didn't realize Zavec has never faced an American opponent before. Randall Bailey was supposed to be fighting in an IBF eliminator the same day, but there's no announcement on Boxrec and the fight is two weeks out.

Good luck to Zaveck in the Delgado fight.

Bailey-Zaveck should be a great fight if it happens, and hopefully Malignaggi will be brave enough to go over and fight him after that.

your translation is wrong. what he really said was "i'm fighting delgado because i'm an overprotected bum."

All you ever do is promote hatred against European boxers.

You are a lowly, de****able slimebag.

I believe Malignaggi wanted Zaveck. Can't remember where I read/heard that but I kind of remember Malignaggi saying that Zaveck wanted too much money.

not true. do you think he's not overprotected? look at the guys he's fighting. why don't you stop supporting mismatches. this guys supposed to be a "champ" and he's fighting guys like paul delgado and Rodolfo Ezequiel Martinez. who are they! even berto looks like he takes on all challengers compared to him.

They tried to make Berto-Zavec a while back but HBO said no thanks.
This fight a tune-up so he wont have been inactive almost a year when he faces Randall Bailey. Zavec got his belt in the champs backyard by KO, then avenged his only loss to the #1 ranked IBF contender in the course of a year.

What did you do last year?

Zavec turned down Alvarez and American exposure to fight a nobody.

Pfftttt give us a link or you're full of shit. Zavec went to Dallas during Pac/Margarito to see if any American promoters were interested in either promoting him stateside or matching him with an HBO-level fighter. He went home empty handed.
