  • I had Hagler up 6-5-1. Close fight no robbery.

    As for the Benitez fight I had Ray comfortably winning.

    Hagler lost the first three rounds? I thought round 3 was a close one and I think I gave it to Marvin.

      It isn't even that big a deal to me, but I know if something went down like that today people would be having a meltdown if dude walked away from a rematch from a win that disputed even as a close fight.

      Either guy could have won close fight, I would have just liked there to be real finality rather than the endless debate but it is what it is and it is still a fun fight to talk about because there is a lot to debate.

      such was srl's career...imo he had all the talent, but was a media darling, prima donna fighter, who beat everybody on his terms, who claimed he didn't do rematches after beating hearns, but when he chose to slug it out with duran and lost straight up, immediately begged for a rematch, especially after he heard duran had slacked off after the first fight...his politics was mad corny, and all the retiring and unretiring started to wear thin with a lot of old school cats i know...cats were cracking up, when terry norris pretty much ended his career...

        As for Benetiz I thought it was a great fight also.... Why do you think the butt was intentional???
        mj223, i can see why you would favor srl, in the hagler fight, but at the same time, you should be able to see why, many who supported hagler, and even casuals, felt srl shoeshined hagler out of his title, when the adage, you gotta whoop the champ, should have applied when it came to beating hagler for his undisputed middleweight title....now, after how srl got on his bicycle in the championship rounds, which was one of the first fights to move to the 12 round format from 15, mj223 can you honestly say srl whooped hagler for his undisputed middleweight title?, or was he more interested in throwing some meaningless flurries, in the last 10 seconds of each round, to steal rounds with the judges and entertain the crowd....

          mj223 my apologies for not responding to the second part of your question about did i think the headbutt is intentional on srl's part...

          being that i haven't re-watched that fight since it aired on abc in the 70's...i would have to take a look at it in its entiretly right now, to see if i still feel like the butt was intentional...i do remember it being a hard clash of heads, which resulted in benitez's forehead to be split down the middle, and i thought that effected his momentum the rest of the fight, and the momentum shift, in srl's favor, happened after the clash of heads....i would have to rewatch it again, to see if i still feel the same now...

          • No, I don't Agree:

            Marvelous Marvin Hagler was a Natural Middleweight!
            Neither Cotto nor Floyd Jr are Middleweight;

            Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard, are both Americans;

            Cotto is a Puerto Rican!

            • Mayweather/Cotto Could Be Next Sugar Ray/Duran 1

              I think it would be a big mistake, if FMJ chooses to stand in the pocket and trade with Cotto for 12 rounds, much the way it was a mistake for SRL, who actually was the natural welterweight to stand and trade with Duran for 15 rounds. Not saying, that Cotto is in the same league with Duran, but Cotto, if he has anything left, does have bricks in his gloves, like the Hands Of Stone.

              That is all.

                  rolaz, at this stage of his career, i think cotto will be a middleweight, by the time he steps on the unofficial scale, if they are fighting for cotto's 154 lb. title...i give fmj, based on his past venture at fighting for a 154 lb. title, an unofficial weight of 150-154....cotto may not be a natural middleweight, but he will be one of the biggest, strongest guys fmj can face, that has some good boxing ability, and better than average pop in his mitts...

                      then maybe, cotto can get inside fmj's head, by talking smack to him in spanish...it worked for duran, when he dogged srl in spanish, and srl, got out his normal fight plan, and went to war with duran, and lost...lol
