This hasn't something to do with Manny being a saint. I'm seriously trying to figure out why he put a milli per pound on Cotto when Cotto never missed weight.

It's the same reason why there are penalties enforced when a fighter comes in over weight. Reason they upped the penalty is because it's a fighter coming from a lower weight division fighting a naturally bigger fighter.

The first notion of Manny fighting above Jr. WW.. people laughed.. said he'd end up in a stretcher.. oscars first jab would send him into the 3rd row.. hatton would maul the little guy.. manny would be coughing up blood after cotto's first body shot landing... etc..

Even if Miguel Cotto comes in over the catch weight for his Nov. 14 showdown with Manny Pacquiao, trainer Freddie Roach would still agree to push on with the fight.

Of course, on one condition.

The World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion from Puerto Rico has to be just two pounds over at 145. Anything more than that, and the 12-round title bout would be called off.

“That’s the highest we could go (147 pounds). I would call the fight off if he comes in weighing more than that," said Roach, now back in the comforts of his Wild Card gym in Los Angeles, California after a month-long stay in the Philippines for the first part of Pacquiao’s training camp for his Nov. 14 slugfest with the 28-year old Cotto.

“We’ll let that fight happen, but I think 147 pounds is our limit."

Floyd Mayweather Jr. came up with that devious plan in his recent comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez as he came in two pounds heavier than the agreed catch weight of 144.

Although the unbeaten American shelled out $600,000 ($300,000 per pound over) as penalty for being overweight, Mayweather was spared from draining his body to meet the catch weight, and thus, came out fresh and the stronger fighter between the two.

In contrast, Marquez had to add weight (from 135 pounds to 144) in his first foray in the welterweight class, resulting in a spectacular, one-sided win for the 32-year old Mayweather.

Cotto has not fought below the welterweight limit (147 pounds) since 2006 and needed to go two pounds below to make the fight possible.

In contrast, Pacquiao will be fighting as a welterweight for the second time in a year. He first fought at 147 when he retired the great Oscar De La Hoya in their “Dream Match" last December.

Under the terms of the contract, Roach said Cotto is bound to pay Pacquiao $1 million for every pound over the 145 catch weight.

The WBO could also stripped Cotto of his welterweight title in case he comes in overweight.

Prior to departing for the U.S. for the last two weeks of training camp, Pacquiao already weighs in at 146.

Roach said he plans to have the boxing champion comes in at 140-142 pounds during weigh-in, and then be at 148 or 149 on fight night.

In contrast, Roach expects Cotto to be 160 by fight night.

Excessive? Maybe but its about the percentage of the fight. Mayweather and Pac would make a lot of money. Its the point of Pac demanding such a thing.

Pac's demand was just as reasonable as Floyd and his OST, reason Floyd agreed to Pac. Floyd wants an assurance just as Pac wants his. Pac said no to this when Floyd said YES.

Since then Floyd beat the #1 WW (who Manny all of a sudden wants to fight NOW) and has got into trouble and is now in court. Ironically court is the same place Pac wanted to fight Floyd. (A real hater at this point would probably say Pac's ducking Floyd in court now as Floyd's in court and Pac's a no show)

All jokes aside at the end of the day when negotiations actually consisted of both parties and media, Team Pac walked. Since then we got a VERY horrible year of Pac fighting hand selected fighters and this year is starting off just as bad. Media, fighters and fans have agreed upon this.

i can see both sides of it. lennox lewis made a good point on ringside. its like floyds saying to pac go over there, come over here, sit down, stand up and pac is like who is this **** to be telling me what to do. both sides should drop everything and fight by the rules the NSAC or whatever other SAC gives them. If that means extra drug testing and weight high weight penalties then fair enough.

That makes no sense. If the Commission are the ones enforcing the penalties, then Manny need not enforce his own. Especially to fighters that have NEVER missed weight.

Has anyone noticed that whenever Bob Arum and Don King co-promote fights it's always a Don King fighter that comes out the winner?

yes they agreed before the fight, but it was after the weigh in. after floyd failed to make the weight Marquez took the extra money otherwise there would have been no fight.

Actually the bold is wrong. PBF and Marquez agreed to the weight change and what amount of money PBF would pay for coming in at 146. It was known by Marquez and his camp BEFORE the weigh-in that PBF was coming in at 146. That is how he got the $300,000 for each lb over. It was already known what the weight was going to be.

They don't pay a "fraction." It's a pretty big fine. Furthermore, that's irrelevant. The bottom line is that the commission decides, right? Or does that not matter? Just wondering which line we're towing here.
