By going to Showtime/CBS, Arum is trying to appeal to the casual fan although Pac already has a grasp on that demographic. The casual fan doesnt care whether Mosley is worthy of a shot. All they care about is if its going to be an action packed fight. I believe Mosley feels he has alot to prove, and whether he wins or loses he's going to do his best to put up a fight. I myself prefer to see Pac face Marquez, but this is the hand we were delt. Might as well enjoy it.Comment

Anything that breaks the PPV stranglehold on boxing is FANTASTIC NEWS.
Boxing belongs on mainstream free-to-air television.
I grew up in watching the biggest fights in the world FREE on mainstream television. I feel sorry for this generation of fans that have to find an illegal way to watch some crappy internet stream on a foreign website or fork out $20-50 just to watch a single event in their homes.
PPV has effectively crippled boxing and reduced it to this over commercialised product that is controlled by television companies and greedy self-serving promoters.
Bring boxing back to the mainstream. Watch the viewing figures triple/quadruple overnight and actually make NEW BOXING FANS.
I care little about Pacquiao vs Mosley, but if you get to watch the best fighter in the world performing free on your tv, then what is there not to like?Comment

All that this will do is pave the way for boxing's glorious return to the mainstream, because Pacquiao vs. Mayweather will be on prime-time network television. Like the Super Bowl, there's FAR more money in commercial endorsements on free television than there is in closed-circuit pay-per-view.Comment

I agree that the move with Showtime is a better one and gets more exposure to a larger audience, but fighting a proven past-it fighter like Mosely in front of this wider audience is like "airing your dirty laundry"!
Boxing IS a business (more so these days than before) and this is probably not the best business move.It just suggests that Manny either fights old past prime fighters or weight drained opponents at a catchweight recently. To be honest,Top Rank is to blame for the majority of this,as are the idiots who buy these substandard PPV's...as long as people keep buying crap like this that Arum offers,it sends him a message that the public enjoy unfair fights that keep his exclusive fighters with the advantages....don't people like fair fights or watching two prime fighters these days?
In short,it is good business for Bob Arum and his fighters that allows a low risk/high reward fight, but poor business for the fans who shell out $50-$60 hoping for a competitive and fair fight.Top Rank have been tricking the public badly with this Shane fight-Arum has lied extensively about how Shane is the right opponent, when only a few months ago he said Shane is old and probably doesn't belong in the ring with Manny...funny how that changes once he sees dollar signs and once he has rights over Shane's future after the Manny fight...
I understand people saying "this is what is available,so we have to accept it",but the point is-is it acceptable and is it really the best fight out there when Manny can clearly fight in deeper divisions that have more talent, but has been guided to fight in the weaker of the 3 divisions that he CAN be fighting in.Last edited by damned1974; 01-25-2011, 11:36 PM.Comment

Boxing is suffering from a multitude of issues, one of the biggest being that HBO and Showtime are the primary distribution arms of the sport.
Both networks pay higher licensing fees that any other network, resulting in higher purses for the fighters themselves. It's a catch-22, fighters should get paid "fairly" for what they bring to an event; however, the issue then becomes that the inmates are allowed to run the asylum, which becomes problematic when fighters only have to fight 1-2 times a year, and then pick and choose opponents that aren't always in the best interest of the sport.
If you take HBO out of the equation, in order for fighters to make the same amount as what they could on HBO, they'd be forced to fight 3-4 times a year on other networks and against the best available competition. With HBO they are overpaid and allowed to drag the sport down with them. Let them starve a little bit and see if that ignites the passion and tradition that this sport was built on.Comment

Some are fans of entertainment.. period. I watched the May/Mosley.. and that joke of a fight May/Marquez. I saw Mora/Mosley. I saw Katsidis/Marquez. I watch the super middle tourney. I watched the Briggs/Klitz.. I'm also hyped for the Devon/Tim fight. Some just watch boxing no matter what.. for entertainment value. Pacquiao/Mosley will def. be an entertaining fight. Mosley is the heavy underdog but to count Mosley out would be ridiculous.
Manny can be hit and likes to slug it out.. Shane can hit very HARD and has speed to go along with that. Shane usually destroys come forward fighters.. so does Pac. Pac is the favorite, but, nothing is a given in boxing.Comment
